Lori Davenport First Person Camping Out For Black Friday (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/23/10 03:52 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

In case you haven't seen a calendar, phone or computer screen, today is Tuesday...which means there's about two-and-a-half more days until Black Friday, including the scrumptious holiday of Thanksgiving. But that hasn't stopped Lori Davenport of St. Petersburg, Florida from setting up a tent outside Best Buy, making her the first person in line in the country for the sales.

Davenport talked to the Associated Press about her theory of "firstness" and what she's planning to buy.

Another demonstration of the repulsive consumerism that permeates our society. And thank you to the media for hyping-up this type of mentality.

Hearing the interview with that incredibly shallow woman, I no longer wonder why the US is in trouble. Yeah, why would you want to waste time getting together with family to give thanks for all the good things in your life when you can camp out in front of a store waiting to buy, buy, buy more, more, more instead? I think I can guess where some Star Trek writer got their idea for the Ferengi.

good heavens, waiting through the night on hard pavement in line for an establishment to open is an utterly boring activity. when I was in college, twenty years ago, I used to do that for a law firm in front of certain government offices as a "placeholder"--I would get there at midnight and wait til the doors were about to open at 8AM, the attorney would saunter up about 10 minutes before opening to take my place. It was an easy way to earn $75 cash, but I couldn't see doing it for fun.

See the woman worshipping her golden calf!

Please God, give this poor woman a sense of proportion. Being first on the moon is one thing, the first in the door at a store,.... not quite the same.

This woman doesn't care about the merchandise. She doesn't even care about Best Buy. Listen to her words. She wants to feel like she "accomplished something." It's part of this country's incessant need to become famous. To have your face plastered on the TV. To be "somebody." What has reality TV taught these monkeys over the last decade or so? Any stupid human trick essentially guarantees you some face time on TV, thus bringing about potential for fame and maybe even some fortune. Her accomplishment isn't being first in line for a TV; it's the article that you just read.

I won't address what this woman is doing, it's her life and if that's what she wants to do with her Thanksgiving holiday so be it.

I do wonder how people today coped or would have coped with America just 30-40 years ago. I'm in my early 50's and suffered through not having stores open on Sunday, no super grocery stores, stores closing at 7pm, no convenience stores selling garbage 24/7, only fast food was McDonalds and they closed at 9pm so none of this we're open until 2am policy, stores closed on most of the big holidays and not just Thansgiving and Christmas, and worst of all no ATM's.

But some how we all survived without having stores and restaurants being open 24/7 and 365. Americans used to have to plan a little though and I think this whole open round the clock world has led to the attention deficit that this country suffers from. I know that technology marches on but society as a hole has regressed to a point where "idiotcracy" is closer than we think (if it's not here already).

Best of luck Ms. Davenport with your haul of Christmas gifts or whatever you're buying. Word to the wise, be on the look out for people who arrive minutes before the doors open and push their way past you. That's survival of the fittest in the new America.

Sorry about all the typos, I tend to do that when I'm really upset. Couldn't find a way to edit it.

My gawd. This video enfuriated me. Being first at a sale is a goal to have in life? Instead of pitching a tent and getting her truly undeserved 15 minutes of fame, she cold have gotten off her butt and spent tomorrow delivering Meals On Wheels (they're always shorthanded on TG) or making turkey sandwiches & handing them out to the homeless.

Go visit a Senior Center. Volunteer at a Food Bank, do anything but think that sitting arond for 3 days to be the first person in the door at a sale is something that's a good thing.

How incredibly egocentric. Watching that video made me want to retch. I didn't find it at all amusing, at the very best, it's pathetic.

Help the homeless? But she wants to be the first to buy the latest edition of Guitar Hero on Friday. Who cares you can get it now...and at the Black Friday sale price...

Tent, bed, sidewalk and outside a store named Best buy. Is she taking clients?
