World News To Be Thankful For (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/25/10 10:31 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

With another Thanksgiving upon us, it's important to look beyond extravagant feasts and offer thanks for some of the global events that shape our lives -- particularly those that do so in positive ways.

And as New Zealanders mourn the loss of their loved ones after a second explosion racked the Pike River coal mine and South Korea prepares to respond to an attack from their northern counterparts, there's no better time to express that gratitude than the present.

In honor of the holiday, The Huffington Post has put together a series of photos from recent events that made us cheer, smile, swoon or laugh over the past few weeks. Be sure to vote for your favorite -- and let us know what we might have overlooked -- in the slideshow below. And have a happy Thanksgiving!

I love Michelle. I think she's a great lady. She has all the dignity and charm to represent America as its First Lady. But I don't think her handlers are very sharp culturally. All she need was a big tent and a jewel in her belly button and the picture would have been complete.

Santa penguins belong in the human hall of shame; Putin's puppy is heartwarming; and, yes, we should be grateful for a first lady and president who take their time to really engage with others, in this case disadvantaged children.
