"When a parent's trying to save their child, all bets are off," remarked Police Detective Kristin Kincheloe after a daring rescue attempt this week in Kansas City. It wasn't an endorsement of victims chasing down criminals -- more an acknowledgment that some instincts just can't be stopped.
Melanie and Aaron Richman were moving from Colorado to Missouri when they got out of their car to talk with relatives in a truck they had been traveling with. Distracted for just a few seconds, an unidentified man jumped in their running 1997 Pontiac Grand Am and attempted to drive off with 6-month-old Samantha Richman still inside.
The young parents gave chase, Melanie shattering a window with her elbow and Aaron diving inside. The suspect got out and ran away.
Surveillance cameras captured the entire incident.
