Scarborough Attacks Palin, Agrees To Help Launch Centrist Civility Group

WASHINGTON -- TV's Joe Scarborough, who today dismissed Sarah Palin as a symbol of "anti-intellectualism" with a "dopey dream" of being president, will help headline the launch next month of a new national group dedicated to restoring civility in politics.

Scarborough, a Republican, former Florida congressman and host of "Morning Joe" on MSNBC, will participate in the debut event of "No Labels" on December 13 at Columbia University in New York.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is also expected to take part, along with an array of other self-described centrists, including retiring Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Sen. Joe Lieberman, (I-Conn.), former Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.), Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn), Los Angeles's Democratic Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Sen. Deb Stabenow (D-Mich.), former Gov. Christie Todd Whitman (R-N.J.) and former Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.)

Mika Brzezinski, Scarborough's co-host, will moderate the panel he is on.

Nancy Jacobson, a leading Democratic fundraiser and wife of Clinton-era pollster Mark Penn, launched "No Labels" last year with major advice coming from Mark McKinnon, who was media advisor to George W. Bush in 2000 and Sen. John McCain in 2008.

The message of the group, encapsulated in a "Declaration" written by McKinnon, is a plea for calm, reason and cooperation. "We are not labels, we are people... We believe hyper-partisanship is destroying our politics and paralyzing our ability to govern... We may disagree on issues, but we do so with civility and mutual respect....

"We have a crisis of governance - a crisis that compels us to work together to move America forward... We must put our labels aside, and put the issues and what's best for the nation first."

Such anti-partisan yearnings are common these days, but what makes "No Labels" potentially significant is its organizational ambition and big-buck backers. The group hopes to set up affiliates in all 50 states and offer support for fellow beleaguered centrists. Jacobson is a prodigious fundraiser with wide contacts.

More important, they group could serve as a natural piece of infrastructure for any independent, centrist candidacy for president.

Organizers stress that the group is "neither a third party nor a stalking horse for any presidential candidate or other candidates."

But Bloomberg's interest in the possibility of an independent bid is well known, and some of the new group's backers are among those advising and encouraging the New York mayor to consider it.

As for Scarborough, he heatedly denies any interest in running -- as a vice presidential candidate on a theoretical Bloomberg ticket.

But he is teasingly vague about what he might consider doing on his own. He avoided a direct answer to the question earlier this month at Harvard, saying only: "There are so many issues where America is united... I think we're coming up on a very historic time. I'm very happy where I am right now, but you never know."

One thing Scarborough knows: he's outraged by Palin's attacks on the experience and bona fides of two Republican presidents, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He indignantly called her out in a Politico website column. "This is one Republican," he wrote acidly," who would prefer that the former half-governor promote her reality shows and hawk her books without demeaning the reputations of Presidents Reagan and Bush."

What would happen if Palin ends up the GOP nominee? As Scarborough says, "you never know."

I'm not sure but isn't he the guy that just told the regressives to make sure they vote against their "enemies"? Not very civil to me.

Civility is indeed an important political virtue - in addition to http://www.NoLabels.org there's also http://www.civilityproject.org to join

I agree with Joe about Ms. Palin - I also agree that somehow, someway, we really have to get out of this partisan gridlock. We have people who are about to be without ANY money b/c these repugs are so set on getting those freaking tax cuts for their benefactors that they won't allow any other piece of business to get done until they get those tax breaks. Anyone who can't see through their games is just blind, but I digress - Ms. Palin is not fit for office but then I have to say, neither is Joe. Neither of them have the temperament, just like McCain didn't. They have anger issues. It shocks me that Joe is actually concerned about the partisanship. I do think he knows alot about governing, but God help the one who might ever disagree with him. He is a bully. Palin is a bully and so is McCain. There are a few others too. I think this is all a ploy though on Joe's part. He's up to something and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he doesn't try to make a run with or without Bloomberg. I am solidly behind our current President, but I do have to admit that unless he and the rest of the dems in office dont' grow a spine pretty quickly, we are toast. I don't know why people are not screaming int he streets over this tax cut/unemployment issue!

So "centrists" (oh, is that what Joe Lieberman is calling himself now?) are the only civil ones? Blatant posturing. What a scam.

Civility is a good gesture--that is what President Obama has been trying to get to happen since his election. He has reached across the isle, he has compromised on just about every policy and to be honest Pres Obama is more of a centrist than he has been given credit for. He has been more civil than the GOP in Congress, who's Mantra has been "The Party of No". He even took the blame for not reaching out to the GOP which was just him being the bigger person to bring even more civility but the Republicans have no interest in stepping to the middle or to compromise for the good of the country. We the American people are not blind to the fact of who needs a lesson in civility.

Anyone who thinks Obama is a centrist is really frightening. He's not left, and he's not right, but he is the ultimate extremist. He is a Progressive with a capital P and anyone who knows anyting about that movement understands just how exteme he is.

I'm curious. How has he reached across the aisle, exactly? I saw nothing but 'take it or leave, we want you to take it, but ultimately we don't care' coming from the White House for the last 2 years. I can't think of one thing he compromised on.

First, if you don't read the news, let me inform you that he has COMPROMISED with the Republicans by agreeing to temporarily extend all the Bush tax cuts in return for extension of unemployment.

Second, were you around when the President went to speak with the Republicans at their retreat about health care reform? Or when he brought them in for a summit on the health care bill? Did you notice that he took the public option off the table from the get-go?

Did you realize that nearly 50% of the stimulus bill consisted of TAX CUTS, which one would expect the Republicans to embrace? Did you realize that before the disaster in the Gulf this spring, he partially lifted the offshore drilling ban in order to bring Republicans to the table on climate change legislation? The guy actually negotiates AGAINST himself.
It astounds me how people like you seem to have this picture of Obama as an extremist gangster who strong-arms to get his way. All that he has shown is that he is a person who wishes to build consensus, but doesn't fight enough for what he believes in. And in fact he seems to be the only person in Washington who understands what compromise is.

I will use your words against you...."anyone who thinks Obama is an extremist is really frightening." Because it means that you are, quite frankly, hallucinating.

This is a good laugh ... No Labels? What we need are labels ... those that tell the truth. People are human and humans have biases and those can be checked when pushed front and center. We need a Label campaign not a No Label one. We need to Get RID of Media Bias by placing the letters R-I-D after the names of every person speaking on a televised news program. When we see how they're registered to vote we are informed immediately about their point of view. And anyone with journalistic intentions will move naturally toward objectivity when the whole world can see how they vote. Instead we're left to trust our media institutions that decide who will opine and who will report the facts. Please .... No Labels? Just label them all http://on.fb.me/dAkWBv

Joe, yesterday on Morning Joe you really proved you're no slouch... As my father used to say, "You're ALL RIGHT. I don't care what they say about you."

Joe has been increasingly uncivil regarding Palin, so this panel is quite the joke.  After seeing his ratings, though, I think I get it.

He's very desperate.  When you're barely beating Joy Behar, you got problems.
