Andrew Stein

NEW YORK — A former New York City Council president caught up in an investigation of a financial adviser to various celebrities has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor tax charge.

Andrew Stein pleaded guilty Wednesday to a single charge of failing to pay his income taxes for 2008. He could face up to a year in prison. The Democrat is also a former state assemblyman and Manhattan borough president.

Stein was swept up in a prosecution that targeted another man. Kenneth Starr was charged in May with operating a Ponzi-like scheme from January 2008 through last April that relied on gaining the trust of his wealthy celebrity clients.

Starr pleaded guilty to fraud charges in September.

None of that was mentioned at Stein's plea. Outside court, he said he was not involved in the wider criminal case.
