Hank Steinbrenner Confident Derek Jeter Will Stay With Yankees

Hank Steinbrenner Derek Jeter

NEW YORK — Hank Steinbrenner thinks Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees will agree to a new contract.

"I feel confident that Derek will remain with the Yankees, and my brother does, as well," New York's co-chairman said Tuesday night in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

The Yankees resumed negotiations Tuesday with Jeter and his agent, Casey Close, a baseball official familiar with the discussion said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the team and Close didn't make any announcements.

Neither the official nor Steinbrenner would discuss what took place directly between the sides in the talks, which were first reported by foxsports.com.

"I'm not going to get into who's met who," Steinbrenner said.

New York had offered Jeter a $45 million, three-year contract at the start of negotiations. Going into Tuesday, the All-Star shortstop had not made a formal proposal.

Ahead of the session with the Yankees, Jeter met with Close to prepare for the resumption of talks, the official said. The sides had not met since Nov. 8.

Before Tuesday, Close had suggested a contract averaging about $23 million for four or five seasons, the baseball official said, but the numbers were suggested loosely by Close and should not be interpreted as a precise request.

"We want to keep him. He's very important," Hank Steinbrenner said. "I certainly hope he remains with us and he certainly should."

Jeter, who turns 37 in June, is coming off a $189 million, 10-year contract, behind only Alex Rodriguez's $275 million and $252 million, 10-year deals.

Another All-Star shortstop, Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki, agreed Tuesday to a new contract that pays him $157.75 million over the next decade. The 26-year-old Tulowitzki had been guaranteed $25.75 million through 2013.

Beckett Media, which prices baseball cards, posted pictures of Jeter in the jerseys all 30 major league teams, a blog page titled "TOTALLY FAKE BASEBALL CARDS."

Beckett playfully envisioned him with the Pirates, Royals and Cardinals, among others. First up is Jeter in a Red Sox uniform on a card that says: "Boston's Best" followed by "Jeter: You Ain't Seen Nawthin' Yet."

His Oakland card says: "Moneyball! Jeter Cashes In With Long-Term Deal," and his Colorado Rockies card calls him the "Blake Street Bambino." His Mets card says: "New York, New York" and "Derek Jeter Takes the Subway in 2011."

Jeter's Dodgers card says: "Bleeding Blue" and "Jeter Sees Green With Long-Term Deal."

He's a Yankee. He should stay there until retirement.

He's probably more valuable to the yankers for marketing, than he would be to another team given his poor fielding and age. I always really liked Jeeter which made ha ting the yankers difficult. This has always been true though. I loved Micky Mantle, Craig Nettles, Thurman Munson, Yogi Berra, etc. just not the team.

I understand why it's so easy for so many to bash Jeter, after all, he is the favorite player on the Yankees, but if you look inside the numbers a little it becomes clear that he's worth the money. While he batted a career low .270 this past season, the difference between .270 and .300 is a total of 20 hits over the course of a season. That is essentially a ground ball with eyes once a week or a little more work in the off-season under the tutelage of a good hitting coach. He was definitely swinging at first pitches a lot more this year than in previous years, so a little plate discipline and his numbers will return to his career norms. Nobody was saying George Brett or Mike Schmidt were done in the years they hit .280 or .250 in different parts of their careers. Great players are capable of off-years and greater players are able to put it past them. In terms of his range at shortstop, it's about the same as it always was. The real difference is who's on third (I'm not asking you who's on third, who's is on first). A-Roid is a substandard third basemen. He does not have the range that Brosius, Ventura and Boone had, so you will probably see more balls get by him on the third base side, but that's because they already got past A-Roid.

He hit .270 last season which is a career low and he's 37 years old now. The Yankees have offered him a three year deal. First base or the outfield is not in his future.
He'll sign.

Can't imagine anyone else paying a 37-year-old shortstop $15 million a year for 3 years.

Jeter is getting squeezed. They KNOW he doesnt want to play anywhere else and Yankee finances may finally be hitting a wall. Meanwhile they want Lee real bad but need to cut some corners somewhere. I hope he calls their bluff. Do the Red Sox need a shortstop? Even if they dont they should make a big and FAT offer to Jeter.

Here is Jeter with the opportunity of a lifetime: thank the Yankees for the generous offer, especially at his age, thank them again for their salary over the length of his expired contract (PAYMENT for the so-called wondrous things he has done for the franchise that his agent seems to think he should be paid again for), thank them again for extending his Yankee life well beyond his effective playing days, and happily sign his new contract. He knows above all others the Golden Glove award is a farce. He also knows he's playing to the left of the best shortstop on the team and, if he really had the team in mind, he'd opt for a job at 3rd. As it is, he's painting his true self fluorescent orange for all to see.

I assume Cliff Lee is watching all this.

Hope he nows better than to sign with a team that handles contracts through the tabloids.

Oh please... like other teams don't do it? The reporters only print stories that will garner attention. When the Bmore Os start winning games, pennants and series titles then they will also be in the spotlight. sooo - there!

I am inclined to believe that Jeter wants the contract along with staying in New York in order to be inducted in the Hall Of Fame as a Yankee.
I am inclined to believe that that his agent is being greedy...
Imagine Jeter in a baseball uniform other than the Yankees Pinstripes?
Hard to fathom!

To be clear, Jeter is calling the shots, not his agent.
I personally think his agent has already got all the calls he gonna get from other teams, if any, that have an interest in Jeter. I'm pretty sure none of them come close 3/45.
It's likely the Yankees will sweeten the pot just a tad, maybe up to 50 mil, but that's as high as they should go.
Jeter is lucky to be offered what they're offering now.

I live 1 mile from Jeter's grotesque 45,000sq ft palace he's building on Davis Island in Tampa and about 4 from George's in Palma Ceia... Not to mention a Rays fan that has to try and compete with you oligarchs in this weighted league.
I think I have more of right commenting on his Yankee gluttony than YOU....you're just a passenger on a very easy ride to success......
