Solar-Powered Electric Popemobile Could Be Coming To Vatican As Benedict XVI's New Vehicle

VATICAN CITY — Anyone have a fast, solar-powered electric popemobile for his holiness?

The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI would gladly use one as another sign of his efforts to promote sustainable energy and take care of the planet, but one has yet to be offered.

Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, who runs the Vatican City state, said Wednesday Benedict would certainly prefer an electric popemobile to a traditional, petroleum-powered one given the priority he has given to making the Vatican a leader in green energy.

His comments came during a presentation of a book on the Vatican's ecological efforts: "The Energy of the Sun in the Vatican." The book documents the 2008 installation of photovoltaic cells on the roof of the Vatican's main auditorium and the 2009 installation of a solar cooling unit for its main cafeteria.

The technology has won awards and garnered Benedict a reputation as the "green pope."

The Germany-based firm SolarWorld, which provided the photovaltaic cells on the auditorium, said Wednesday it has discussed the idea of providing the pope with a solar-powered electric car.

SolarWorld marketing chief Milan Nitzschke said the main hurdle is to get the Vatican security apparatus to sign off on it, since some still have concerns – unfounded, he said – that electric cars don't accelerate as quickly as traditional ones.

"It's really no problem," he said, noting that electric cars can go from 0-100 kph in three seconds.

"This is something we have to discuss with the people who are in charge of the security aspect, but of course this is possible and it would be a very, very huge symbol."

Lajolo added: "If he's offered a functioning, efficient and appropriately sized popemobile, why not?"

"It would also be a demonstration, a sign of his ecological attention. And we hope SolarWorld can furnish it," Lajolo said, though he added that the Vatican would be open to any other carmaker donating one as well.

When he's outside the Vatican, Benedict usually rides in a modified white Mercedes-Benz outfitted with bullet-proof windows; it has room for two passengers in addition to the pope, who sits on an elevated chair to wave to crowds.

Benedict has spoken out frequently, including in his encyclicals and books, about the need to safeguard Earth's natural resources.

"If you want to cultivate peace, protect creation," he exhorted in his 2010 message for the church's World Day of Peace.

Well, this is a step up. After all the stories of Benedict protecting pedophile priests, to the Vatican trying to become green, I have come a step up from disliking the man to now having mixed feelings.

I am sure he'd prefer a gilded chariot pulled by 12 half dressed teenage altar boys.

But in these times we must all do our part to cut back ain't that right Your Eminence.

Interesting that the Jesus nor the Apostles showed such pomp and circumstance. Isn't it amazing that you have to get an appointment to speak with the Pope, but you can speak with Jesus and his Father "freely" with no appointment.

A pope who so obviously fears death illustrates everything you need to know about his faith, and his "religion". If I recall correctly, his original boss walked around unprotected, was arrested without resistance, tortured and executed - all the while asking for forgiveness for his executioners.

Hmmm...

He doesn't fear death...he fears where he'll end up.

Tough crowd!

Well, I'm at atheist, but I'm also green, and I think it's good when a world leader says positive things about green technology. It doesn't happen often enough. There are a billion Catholics, if even one percent of them are inspired by this or that remark from the Vatican to try to reduce their carbon footprint, that's pretty huge.

Okay, pardon the interruption, I guess you can continue with the jokes about red slippers and the Inquisition now.

the Pope mobile has always been the nail in the coffin for me about God's existence, or his relationship with his " homeboy". If you're God's right hand here on the earth, why the need for such extravagant protection? Why should any pray asking for help, when GOD won't even stick his neck out to help the guy in the funny hat? Seriously, if he doesn't give a hoot about the Pope, and won't protect him, why bother prayer and asking for help so that the Toronto Maple Leafs finally win a Stanely Cup after a billion years?

Why would you think that the Pope is Gods right hand man? Have you read this in the bible or are you basing your opinion on mainstream opinion?

I have never read anywhere in the Bible about the Pope.

Why would a dude who talks to God (and apparently gets answered) need a bulletproof ride?

What he's saying offends god as much as it does us. He needs the popemobile, as it's not only bulletproof, but also highly thunderbolt resistant.
