Jim Inhofe Is Latest Casualty In 'War On Christmas'

Inhofe

The 2010 edition of the "War On Christmas" isn't merely playing itself out in obscure Smithsonian exhibitions. It's also opened up a front in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a scheduled holiday parade parade is making Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) have a sad because of the way it reminds him of the existence of other holidays and other people who participate in other religions. Per Jillian Rayfield, at TPM:

Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe (R) says he won't participate in Tulsa's annual Holiday Parade Of Lights until the "forces of political correctness" put "Christmas" back in the title. "I'm not going to ride in a Christmas parade that doesn't recognize Christmas," he said.

"Last year, the forces of political correctness removed the word 'Christmas' and replaced it with 'Holiday' instead," the Tulsa World reports Inhofe said. "I am deeply saddened and disappointed by this change."

Indeed: why is no one making an "It gets better" YouTube clip for the "saddened and disappointed" Inhofe? What does the insensitive monster who runs Tulsa have to say about it?

Tulsa mayor Dewey Bartlett acknowledged the reality of the situation. "If it was up to me, I'd call it a Christmas parade, but I also understand that we have a diverse community, and I'm sensitive to the importance of the many cultures and traditions that make up our city," he said.

You know, as a Christian in America, I got to tell you: we have it so good here! It pretty much rules: not only do I get all sorts of time off from work at Christmastime, I get radio stations full of Christmas carols and a teevee full of Christmas specials, one of which has been reciting the Gospel of Luke on network television for forty-five years. Pretty soon, I will have the opportunity to zoom around on Creationist roller-coasters, or something, in Kentucky. On top of that, Christmas is dominant design aesthetic everywhere you go in America, beginning in about mid-October, annually. Everywhere I look, my love of Christmas and my personal religious faith is being overwhelmingly jammed down my throat -- whoops, sorry, I meant "validated."

I don't know if I'll have the chance to talk to the fancy new space bacteria that NASA has discovered, but I look forward to the opportunity to field this question: "Doesn't this 'War On Christmas' actually cheapen the actual instances of brutal religious persecution that have occurred throughout your planet's history?" I'll reply, "Oh, did NASA not brief you guys on that time where we decided to totally flip out and lose all sense of perspective?"

There will be a pause, and the space bacteria will ruefully remark, "I guess the idea of us building a mosque to our space-bacteria gods is a real non-starter."

As a resident of OK, Inhofe only represents the people who think like him and who believe like him. So, being a Democrat, and my religious beliefs are no where near this freaking state's, I have no representation. It is a horrible state to live in and I hope to be out soon. Also, may I add this man's pilot's license needs to be revoked. He can't land a plan to save his soul.

I'm with you, Inhofe! I hate wishing people a Happy New Year too! HolidayS (plural) is expecting too much cheer and goodwill from me. I try to be a proper Christian, all entitled and grouchy, and all these people running around celebrating general pagan winter solstice holidays modified to suit particular religions with all this joy and goodwill just ruins it for me.

It should be noted that the name of the parade was changed LAST YEAR. There was no controversy until the good ol' senator decided to make one so he could get a little press for himself. No one reported this (or cared about it) during the 2009 holiday season, so why does anyone pretend to care now?

I'm feeling a lot of these so-called Christians haven't a CLUE. They should go back and read their New Testament (and do the right things) instead of bellyaching this NONSENSE to get attention Christmas after Christmas. Shame on their pretense - Just because they say: Lord Lord !!

Oh, yes, poor Inhofe. How terrible that he was invited to participate in an event that included ALL the citizens he represents, not just those whose religious beliefs are in lock step with his. Wow, who'd have thought that as a Senator, a person would be asked to do something as distasteful and offensive as this?? Why, I think he ought to give people a real loud message about just how incensed he is to have been asked to do such an odious task. He should quit his job as Senator, go on the speaking circuit, and get a reality show. I mean, isn't that what Republicans do when things don't go their way 100 percent of the time?

If Christmas was celebrated as a single day, like every other holiday, there would'nt be any push back. People would be happy to say "Merry Christmas" on Dec 25th. But the freaking holiday starts the day after Thanksgiving and runs until after the New Year. Enough is enough. I reserve the right to celecrate Christmas on no other day of the year except Christmas.

Liturgically speaking, the Church is currently NOT in the Christmas season, it is Advent.

The Christmas season doesn't begin until Christmas Day, and generally runs through the Feast of Epiphany on January 6 (the Twelve Days of Christmas -- that is where it comes from).

What we are seeing is the Retail business creating "Christmas Season" -- which for them runs from right after Halloween through Christmas Eve.

Their agenda is nothing more than profit, and turning the holiday into nothing more than a celebration of materialistic excess, which is rather contrary to what Christmas is SUPPOSED to be about.

Also, for Christians, Christmas is not even the most important holiday.

That would be Holy Week, culminating in what in the Catholic Church celebrates as the Triduum -- really one celebration running over three days. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil --which is actually the main celebration of Easter.

Both of which are inextricably linked to the centuries older pagan rituals of Winter Solstice and Vernal Equinox. Particularly that last thing. Or is it just an ironic coincidence that resurrection and rebirth happen in the Spring?

I am in no way shocked by the Left wing Liberals spouting off about how Christmas isn't about Christ. What I am surprised at is the way Liberals still claim to be diverse and open. Ha. That's a laugh. But then again, so are Liberals~
05:27 PM on 12/04/2010
Not all "Left wing Liberals" are opposed to acknowledging a Christmas celebration as a Christmas celebration. Problem is, the extreme voices always get the microphone. Same as on the right.

Why are moderate voices always ignored in these kinds of instances? I imagine because moderates, as a group, rarely sue.

We haven't taken the Christ out of Christmas, We just acknowledge there are more people who celebrate this time of year than Christians and we want to acknowledge everybody. We want to be inclusive as opposed to those few Christians who want to exclude everyone not in lockstep with yourselves.

I think it is time for everyone who is against Christmas to work on that day. No paid holiday for people who oppose Christmas.

So you want to punish people fro your holiday if theyd on't believe what you believe. Just take a deep breath and go back and look at the posts from you. Egotistocal, Selfish, Self Serving and for what? Supposedly in Christ's name. Christ never taught you anything that you said today

Punish? Not at all. Not all holidays include everyone. I have many Jewish friends that don't demand for me to participate with them in their holidays. They ask, and I accept. But I surely don't try and make their holidays about me.

If they are against Christmas they work. Ok Pope Peggy what else you got? How about if everyone that is against Christmas cancels it takes a vacation day and makes you work because you are FOR Christmas

That makes about as much sense as what you said.

Wow. Do you always act so childish?

Christmas is a christian holiday . It signifies the birth of Jesus Christ. Why is this so horrible to Liberals? If you dislike the worfs "Merry Christmas" you don't have to say it. While you are at it, make sure and work on Christmas Day

Christmas signifies the biggest retail shopping season of the year. The birth of Jesus was not in December, although pagan solstice celebrations with evergreen trees, lights and etc were.

Nobody is saying anything against Christmas - but if you're going to have a community parade, why would you want to intentionally exclude all the folks who don't do Christmas?
02:58 PM on 12/04/2010
No one is excluding them. If they don't want to participate in a Christmas Parade, no one will make them do it. Christmas is and always has been a celebration for christians. Sorry if that offends anyone. I don't get offended when other religions have celebrations and demand that they call them something different due to Political Correctness. How about this: anyone not wanting Christmas included doesn't need the day off either. All of those people can go ahead and work on Christmas Day.
