The photos may resemble holiday greeting cards, but the mood was more frantic than festive as heavy snowfalls crippled cities and stranded travelers across much of northern and central Europe on Thursday, the AFP is reporting.

Dozens of flights were canceled in London, Paris and Frankfurt -- three of Europe's main transit hubs -- while both domestic and international train travel remains extremely limited as metropolitan residents dig themselves out of the snow drifts.

On a more tragic note, the freezing weather has claimed 18 lives, mostly of homeless men, in Poland, where temperatures plunged to minus 33 degrees Celsius (minus 27.5 Fahrenheit), the BBC is reporting.
