Tajikistan, Land Of The Unibrow (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 12/04/2010 9:49 am   Updated: 05/25/2011 6:15 pm

Put down those tweezers, ladies, and take a cue from the women of Tajikistan who cherish the unibrow. GlobalPost reports that Tajik females even use an herbal remedy to achieve the bushy look:

Usma, a leafy green herb, is sold in all Tajik markets. You can get a small bunch for about $0.06. The process is simple but effective, several market women assured me. Take a bunch of usma and let it dry in the sun for a couple hours. Then grind up the leaves until a dark green goo seeps out. Dip a branch of usma-- or a matchstick, if you want to be more precise -- into the goo and smear it on your eyebrows, making sure, of course, to color the space in between. Leave on for 15 minutes, and repeat the smearing process one or two more times. The result is a deep black unibrow, rich and expressive.

Check out the unibrow chic Tajik look. All photos and captions courtesy of GlobalPost, where you can find more.

A woman with a unibrow in Kulyab, southern Tajikistan. Women with accentuated eyebrows have become increasingly rare in Dushanbe, but many can be seen in villages outside the capital.

Am I, like, the last woman on planet earth who doesn't do anything to her eyebrows? No plucking, no growing (like unibrows0, no penciling or painting, nothing. I'm middle aged, I never have, I never had any complaints from men, either. One man even particularly loved my eyebrows the way they were. (I won't share further detaiils, however, as to why.)

I am seriously asking the board this question though, because lately, I've played with the idea, for the first time of plucking or waxing or whatever you to achieve these designer lines I'm noticing more. Maybe I'll try it.

So tell me - is waxing better -- or doen't that permanently remove the hair so it can't grow back? In which case, plucking would be better? (Because what if you make a mistake? But doesn't plucking, then, also hurt?) Also, how you decide on design, especially if you going for more permanent removal and at the hands of someone else. And how do you pick someone to do it for you? If you don't pick someone, what are the best home approaches, and for a novice?

Lastly, I would like to know again, if anyone else has never fooled with their eyebrows - am I really the Last of the Mohegans - and I am curious how men on the board feel about natural eyebrows.

In the Central Asian culture it is believed that the closer a girl's eyebrows are, the closer to home she marries. So having a unibrow marks the wish to marry someone in her hometown or neighborhood (closer to her parents).
