I would vote for the pyramid tomb of the first emperor of China. It is rumored that his tomb has a map of China where the rivers and oceans are made of liquid mercury and the ceiling has constellations made with precious and semi-precious gems.

Here in Orlando there used to be this odd theme park called Splendid China and when it was closed a few years ago they auctioned off everything. I went out there with the goal of getting a model of one of those terracotta soldiers. I snagged a nice one about 18 inches high for 20 bucks, which stands on my back porch. This past summer one of the cats knocked it over and his head broke off, but a little Gorilla Glue fixed him right up.

A couple of the places in Mexico, while interesting, are not among the great indigenous sites of Meso America. Guatemala's Tikal should not have been left off the list. It is one of the great Mayan cities and truly magnificent.

My brother and I took a pilgrimage trip to Ethiopia to see the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, which is where many people believe the Ark of the Covenant is. We then traveled to Lalibela and I must say, the stone cut churches are very fascinating to see. I think that is probably #2 on the most interesting places on this list.

Maybe it's time for a new title, I think we have gone past 11 places. I think the pic of the mask at Kohunlich from here http://mayantrip.com is still the most bizarre is still the most bizarre.

What is bizarre about these places? They are art or religious sites and facinating. One place that was not mentioned was Giant's Causeway in northern Ireland. Granted it was not built by humans, it the core of an ancient volcano, but it is an awesome place to see.

No Cappadocia in Turkey?

Caves the housed more than 20,000 during prehistory, a city carved into rock, and pillars shaped like... Well, you will see.

That is a good choice. I found it amazing that in between all the pillars and pictures of houing units, they did not forget to throw in a couple of chicks in bikinis.

Stonehenge. Such fond memories of having been there during the 1970s when
one could walk amongst the giant stones, touching them, trying to fathom their
significance, photographing at close range.

I can't imagine how it would feel to me now to be kept away by a fence.
My trip to stonehenge is one of those rare events in my life which I'll
consider as a gratitude today.

Overcrowding and the fence kept me away from Stonehenge when visiting the U.K. What I cannot understand however is how a photograph of Stonehenge appeared in my camera! Perhaps it's a picture of a model that I don't remember seeing, but it sure looks like the real thing.
09:17 AM on 12/07/2010
What's amazing is that while Stonehenge is mobbed with tourists being kept far away by fences, other exciting megalithic sites are visited only by sheep and one may sit amongst the stones for as long as they like.

One example would be Long Meg and Her Daughters.

I had to look up Borobudur, but after seeing pictures I have to agree on both counts.
