Ed O'Neill: Jane Lynch Should Not Have Won Emmy

First Posted: 12/06/10 12:49 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

Oneil Lynch

Ed O'Neill decided to pick a fight with Sue Sylvester. The 'Modern Family' star told TV Guide that while he enjoyed Jane Lynch's portrayal of the surly gym teacher on 'Glee,' he didn't think it deserved the Emmy it earned her.

"I love Jane, honestly I do," he told the magazine. "I'm dying to star in one of Christopher Guest's movies alongside her, but I don't think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. (Sue Sylvester) is just a one-note character."

As for who he thought was deserving of the win? None other than on-screen wife, Sofia Vergara.

"Sofia is just so, so funny," O'Neill said. "I don't think people realize how hilarious she is. She's so sharp with her wit, it's amazing."

I agree with Ed. I can't stand Glee either.

Well, the award isn't for funniest person in a comedy, as some commenters seem to think. It's best actress. Which actually seems to work against Sofia, since her character isn't a huge departure. So I guess this is a pointless comment. Sorry, folks. But I agree with the one-note character critique of Sue Sylvester; she's basically a caricature who can occasionally gain facets over the course of an episode, but the reset button seems to be pressed after each episode and she goes back to being Wiley Coyote by the beginning of the next

...and Al Bundy should now a one-note performance when he gives, uh, sees one. As best I can tell, Sofia Vergara is playing herself. Give me Jane Lynch's Sue Sylvester anytime. Last night's performance alone was Emmy worthy.

I think the character of Sue Sylvester has shown many sides. She made me cry at the end of the Grilled Cheesus episode. Sofia Vergada's character, while funny, hasn't made me cry!

Jane Lynch doesn't deserve an Emmy,  She deserves EVERY Emmy!  She's the best.  She deserves the Emmy for Best Actress Ever in Anything.

Can Ed say sour grapes?

Both shows are funny but Jane Lynch did deserve the emmy - Glee is HUGE! Her character is not one note either - she also has a soft side - with her sister on the show.

I'm not sure he deserves one either..he played homer simpson for 10 years on Married with Children

Both of these shows are a joke, I never once laughed at Modern Family. As much as I hate Glee, even I admit that Jane Lynch's character is the only thing great about this show. She completely steals every scene she is in.

If you never once laughed while watching Modern Family, there is no hope for you.

I agree....how can you not love Modern Family? Or Glee, for that matter?

Has Ed Harris ever suffered through an episode of Modern Family? Not at all funny, Don't believe the hype.

No kidding. I just watched it for the first time -- Season 2, Episode 1. I immediately called my dentist to schedule a more pleasant experience.

Thank you for saying that! Some of my friends raved about that show and so I watched it. It was NOT funny or even amusing. It was so boring. Jane Lynch is fabulous!

I think the difference is that Jane plays a character very much unlike herself. Sofia Vergara is the same naturally funny person on talk shows as she is "in character" on her show. Both funny, both charming...but there's a big difference.
