Yet another good reason as to why it's time to stop this mindless jingoistic nonsense bandying about the anthem as if its "Happy Birthday" at all sorts of public events.

You know, everyone with a negative comment to make about Mike Eli muffing the national anthem should realize that everyone falls short from time to time. The difference is that Mike takes a chance on falling short publically in front of thousands. Entertainers like Eli Young Band that deliver the anthem before a sporting event do it out of graciousness and patriotism instead of financial gain. So to those of you that have never fouled something up, go ahead; boo and criticize if you want. To the rest of you, show a little respect and class, and realize that nobody is perfect - especially in front of 70,000 people.

I can't sing good enough to woo a NFL croud like that, but I've seen tons of people young and old sing this song. I've seen kids for days sing this song for NFL and NBA games. Even Roseanne got it right accept for her crotch grab at the end. Eli Young didn't do their homework and it was embarassing.

You're a twit. I suppose you've never screwed up once in your life, much less had the opportunity to do it publically.

Wouldn't you rather live in a world where instead of booing him, everyone just started singing louder to help him out. I know - silly idealist. But that's what I want.

I was there, it was bad. The few seconds where he stopped were very awkward. But seriously, how do you mess it up? It's not that difficult to remember the words.
09:46 AM on 12/07/2010
Maybe it's not difficult to mess it up when you're sitting at your computer thinking about the words. But let me ask you, have you ever sang a solo of one of the most difficult songs for a singer to sing (it has quite a range) in front of thousands of people? I bet not. It can be quite difficult.
10:10 AM on 12/07/2010
I was saying the words aren't that difficult to remember. Sure it has quite the range, and I agree it's difficult to sing, but it's not hard to remember the lyrics. Especially if you are a "national recording artist" (as announced at the game) whose profession is singing in front of thousands of people.

Sigh.

It's still not as bad as when Roseanne "sang" it.

Maybe ppl easily forget the words to this song because it was originally written agaisnt the melody of a beer drinking song from london. I have never drank alcohol but I have seen drunk ppl before and they tend to forget words and whole phrases....lol

Not as bad as Obama botching the U.S. motto and Declaration of Independence.

Or when The Justice botched the presidential oath/swearing in in at the inauguration.

Or when Obama couldn't remember how many states there were in the Union.

Forget the fact that I can't really sing... though I'm great on karaoke... I wouldn't do this just for the fact that stage fright would get the best of me. I'm sure the guy knows the national anthem. He just wasn't ready for the big time.

I hate when someone comes and does this and they're unprepared. I also hate when they feel the need to do it like no one else has done it, they just gotta make it their own, essentially making it impossible for you to sing along, or even recognize the tune AS the national anthem. Just sing the damned song...don't emphasize the parts that aren't emphasized in the song as everyone else knows it...and quit already with the odd notes you decide you have to wring out for 30 seconds at a stretch!

About the only thing I can say in defense of some botched performances is that on the field it is really hard to concentrate on the song with the reverb and delay in the broadcast throughout the stadium.

Gee, let's all take a moment to remember Carl Lewis' rendition of our National Anthem prior to a Washington Bullets game years ago. Or how about Rosanne Barr's fine performance before a Padres game? Two shining examples of idiocy that make this incident look like the most minor of all.

I mentioned Roseanne's version in my post, but I hadn't read yours yet. I didn't know Carl Lewis had sung it. Wonder if it's on YouTube. Just the idea sounds horrid.F&F.
