No president has ever been unhorsed in a primary, & Obama won't be the first.

I can't stand people who say:" That's how its always done, that's why we do the same way this time".

This implies the reasoning of someone who has absolutely no imagination and thoughts to achieve something greater, better.

The only challenger Obama has to worry about is Howard Dean...he's probably the only progressive candidate on the left that may have a shot at beating him....unless Obama changes his ways and stop ignoring his base.

It's been fascinating to watch the left's emotional roller-coaster these past few weeks. It's also been fascinating to watch Obama out-run them, and to observe their responses to the final deal in the last 24 hours. Krugman has gone from "Let's Not Make A Deal" to "better than what I expected." The response from the far-right has also been illuminating. Drudge rushed to declare Obama's payroll tax cut as a Republican idea. Hinderaker below insists "Obama has admitted that the Republicans were right all along." Notice something about all of this? They all now realize that Obama has been a little shrewder than they took him to be.
Substantively, the Dish is in some ways horrified that the result of the last election - which was dominated by the view that deficits need to be controlled and that new stimulus is evil - turned out to be ... a new bipartisan stimulus package financed by borrowing! At the same time, it's clear that this also clears the stage for a two-year fight over long-term fiscal balance, distinct from the short-term need to recover from recession. And that is the best context for serious reform. If we reform the tax code, and cut entitlements and defense, we should do so for structural, long-term reasons, not in response to a particular crisis. That's the chance we now have, if Obama leads the way (as I suspect he will).

the Braintrust of Obama's white house has proven to be empty of brains.  Talk about incompetence.

Is this anything thing like calling the election for Al Gore in 2000? (BTW, Al Gore won) We'll know soon enough. If no one comes out of the woodwork by February, it's not going to happen. If it did happen, Obama would win in a landslide. He certainly could turnout moderates, and conservative Democrats as well as the African American vote for the primaries. I can't see a candidate that's more progressive being able to beat him in the midwest, west, and southern states. If the economy continues to improve, it will become increasingly harder for anyone to oppose him.

I disagree with Dan Rather and all he is doing is trying to stir the pot.

Though I am flummoxed by the tax 'deal' made, after watching Lawrence O'Donnell on Last Word, I got perspective from someone who actually worked in Congress. His explanation on the complexity of retroactively re-writing tax law after Jan was sobering. Simply put, it would never happen.

Dan just wants an audience. I don't blame him for fanning the flames of a news story but O's not getting primary-ed. Not saying he doesn't have a lot of work to restore confidence in his presidency concerning the base and progressives as a whole, but at least for now, he's the best man for the job.
I will be looking for some consistency from him going forward.
Off-subject but what Landrieu said yesterday was ludicrous. As a Dem she voted for the Bush tax cuts; now the throws O under the bus? She nothing but a sanctimonious DINO.

No, Mr. Rather, I bet everything in the bank that he will not receive an even remotely serious primary challenge.

The cat's out of the bag. Nearly everyone has figured out that Obama is not at all the man that he said he was during the campaign. He should step down at the end of this term to avoid embarrassment

True, he isn’t – he campaigned much further to the right than he has governed.  You are overlooking the fact that, of course, this is just fine with Democrats, 80% of whom support him ( http://theobamadiary.com/2010/12/08/obamas-silent-majority/ ).
