Go for laughs with Dick Cavett and Mel Brooks at the Saban Theatre or screams with Guillermo Del Toro and his new film, Cronos. Or transcend both with the Zócalo Public Square event, "Where Does Consciousness Come From?"
One of the most influential producer/director/writer/actors of our time interviews one of the most significant cultural figures of our time. Mel Brooks talks with television talk show host Dick Cavett about Cavett's latest book, Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets. Writer's Bloc points out that to call Cavett a "talk show host" is "like calling John Le Carre or Elmore Leonard or Martin Amis a novelist. Or Christopher Hitchens a columnist." Expect an evening of fiery wit, sharp argument, and intelligent conversation--just like Cavett's shows. Dick Cavett and Mel Brooks When: Tuesday, December 7 (7:30pm) Where: Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills, CA 90211 Cost: $23 Photo via Flickr: nick step

Zócalo Public Square presents USC neuroscientist Antonio Damasio on the topic, "Where does consciousness come from?" Damasio will be discussing the "scientific evidence that consciousness is in fact a biological process created by living organisms," contrary to our longstanding religious and philosophical belief that the "soul" is separate from the body. His book Self Comes to Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain will be available at the event for purchase. Where Does Consciousness Come From? When: Tuesday, December 7 (7pm) Where: The RAND Corporation, 1776 Main St. Santa Monica, CA 90401 Cost: Free, but reservations needed. Photo via Zócalo Public Square.
