FLASHBACK: Obama Slams Bush Tax Cuts For 'Millionaires And Billionaires' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/07/10 12:23 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

NEW YORK -- Over the past three months, Obama described the Bush-era program that he's now adopting as his own as "tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires" no fewer than 50 times, according to a review of his stump speeches, weekly addresses, and comments to campaign donors and members of the news media.

The rhetoric was deliberate: Obama was trying to cast Republicans as the party of the wealthy while his fellow Democrats represented the middle class.

He used that rhetoric at campaign events across the country, from Los Angeles and Las Vegas to Des Moines, Iowa, and Richmond, Virginia.

During at least three pre-election rallies, Obama, playing to crowds filled with die-hard supporters, railed against the tax cuts for the wealthy, eliciting rounds of boos from the audience, according to White House transcripts.

Obama repeated the "millionaires and billionaires" line once again on Monday in announcing the deal, but with a slight twist: Rather than rejecting Republicans' call for a full extension of the tax cuts, he simply expressed opposition to their demand of making it permanent.

Obama didn't make that distinction on the campaign trail.

But in addition to the class-warfare rhetoric, Obama described the tax cuts as unaffordable and ultimately ineffective.

On Sept. 25, during his weekly radio address Obama referred to the initiative as "tax breaks we cannot afford."

A few days later, during an event the White House billed as a "backyard discussion" at the home of a family in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Obama said the nation would "have to borrow the $700 billion" -- the estimated cost of the cuts over 10 years -- "from China or the Saudis or whoever is buying our debt, and then we'd pass off on average [a] $100,000 check to people who are making a million dollars, up to more than a billion dollars."

Obama wanted to make sure that his audience understood that either the U.S.'s main rival for decades to come would be financing the tax cut, or the nation that sells the U.S. most of its oil. He used the reference to China and Saudi Arabia a few times.

And while Republicans and some Democrats have claimed that no one -- even the wealthy -- should have their taxes raised during a recession because that could stunt the recovery, Obama cast aside those fears, arguing on Sept. 29 that "98 percent of Americans wouldn't see any benefit from it."

On Monday, the White House tone towards the tax cuts changed from hostility to acceptance. On a conference call with reporters, senior administration officials declined to explain why.

If passed by Congress, the tax initiative would expire in two years. The Federal Reserve forecasts the unemployment rate to hover around 8 percent at the end of 2012. Prior to the current recession, unemployment hadn't reached the 8 percent level since January 1984. There have been two recessions since then: 1990-91 and 2001.

It's unclear how the White House will be able to let the tax cuts lapse with 8 percent unemployment. Senior administration officials declined to comment when asked.

By now what else is new?

He is there to control liberals for the sake of whoever controls him.
A Trojan Horse is worse than any Republican because he destroys opposition from within.

Remember that when taunted "Do you really want his opponent?"
In the short run, we must take that trade off.

The reason our government does not negotiate and pay ransom for hostages is because they know it is a no-win situation. Yes, you may free a hostage, today, but then every Tom, Dick and Harry is going to start taking hostages so they can get paid.

I know the unemployment benefits are important, and I know I would want them if I was unemployed. Heck, there is a lot of stuff I want that I just cannot get. Making the whole economy and 300 million Americans pay the price so you can help 15 million Americans get an extension on paltry benefits so the Republicans can help the top 2% income earners who are not in danger of losing their home or feeding their family just does not make any sense.

Wow! Talk about twisting words and meaning. Obama didn't approve of W's tax cuts for the RICH. Letting them expire would not change anything for the vast majority of Americans. He's all for tax cuts for the middle class though, and ALWAYS has been!.

I, personally feel I have been previously "BUSHWACKED" for 8 years and I can see soon the public will be getting more of the same.

There are other good people worthy of a vote for the presidency. Unfortunately, none are from the U.S., which has proven incapable of electing a leader because it is owned by corporations who are hoping to eliminate elections entirely as a waste of taxpayer money.
08:49 AM on 12/08/2010
I can agree with that. I think what the problem is is that if we let people from other countries to start controlling who is the leader of our country then we may start having to much influence over our government from other nations such as what it was like when we were still ruled by england back in the 1700's. If we must let other people that are not U.S citizens vote for our presidency then there must be a set of rules so that way there is not to much outside influence. Then there is also if there are any people that would be interested in voting for our presidency. It would be like us voting for the next Prime Minister of Canada. I don't think that there are to many people that would be interested in doing that other than the Canadians.

In all human interaction the basis of assessment is performance.   Relative to the goals, what was accomplishment.?  What was produced?  What direction has been achieved?  Are members growing, developing and performing tfor the mission statement and organizational goals?  Is the CEO becoming more competent and courageous?

Hillary Clinton for President in 2012, she keeps her promises. Bye Barack!
08:51 AM on 12/08/2010
I do not think that any president has kept any of their promises which is why the country is circling the drain and is bound for disaster due to poor leadership and constant war, thus which is why the Roman Empire also fell. It was because of poor leaders and constant war.
12:13 AM on 12/09/2010
That's making a huge assumption. There's no guarantee that she would have done anything different. Obama was pushed in a no-win situation. The ones to blame are the people who voted in 2008 and either abandoned him or were too lazy to vote in 2010. If they had we wouldn't be in this situation today. Democrats need to stop whining and start working to get Republicans out of office. It's not Obama's fault.
01:41 PM on 12/10/2010
Thank you and that's what democrats need to understand. The other thing is, if Congres had worked on this since 2006 when they regain control, we wouldn't be in this situation!

Obama reneged on a campaign promise and as the nerve to chew out the Democrats for being pis*s*d with him. He's insufferable. He has gut punched us one time too many. This is the last straw. I'm on the hunt for a challenger in 2012. He will NEVER get my vote again. Spitzer, Dean, Bloomberg, Hillary, Franken, Richardson, Hikenlooper - anybody but Obama.

We are going to say do your home work before you Criticize the President, this Came from CNN they played this all day but they are not tell you that the President don't believe in the Bush Tax's Cut, what they are saying it's OK to let the Bush Tax's Cut Expire, all they want is a Story, they don't give a dare about the People, they to are looking out for themselves, they have hung around the Doors in Congress like Buzzards. We have never seen so much of BS.

As much as I was hoping The President wouldn't compromise with the republicans, it was
a damn if you do, damn if you don't situation.
Because I'm still confident President Obama has the best interest of the underserved citizens at heart, I respect his decision.
If The President had not WORKED things OUT so people could get their unemployment
benefits extended, THAT, would have been a real disaster.

It's unfortunate the republicans have such a strong appetite for greed. What is it going to take
for them to stop worshiping that MIGHTY $$DOLLAH$$ ??? ???? ?????s.

What will they do when the TSUNAMI of TRUTH sweep their MONEY-god away,
leaving them with less dollars than the people they are trying to oppress.

When their lavish lifestyles turn into a nightmare and they are forced to decide which product
to purchase between toothpaste and toilet paper, they will long for the days they could have
did the right thing for the citizens of America , but, chose not to.
If, reaping what we sow is TRUE --- they are in for one.
If, what goes around, comes around is TRUE ---they are in for one
(Bottom Line) ---they will be:
DAMNED IF THEY DO and DAMNED CAUSE THEY DID

It's cute you continue to keep faith in Obama. What has been your favorite from him? Ending Gitmo? Slowing down the wars? Ending DADT? Offering a public option? Pushing cap-n-trade? Taxing the nasty rich? Which, so many good for the working man options by this talker.

So cute are the Obama supporters/believers. In his case, words speak louder than actions! LOL
03:34 AM on 12/08/2010
Not sure if this makes any sense. Obama had to extend the tax cuts for the rich because the Republicans refused to budge on anything else if he didn't; blackmail essentially.
12:17 AM on 12/09/2010
So yeah, abandon Obama and it will guarantee someone like Sarah Palin or Mitt Romney in the White House. How does that help? People are too fickle and unwilling to be reasonable and stay in it for the long haul.
09:02 AM on 12/08/2010
First the longer we extend welfare the longer some people are not going to be looking for jobs. If you take their feeling of security that the government is providing with extended time that a person can be on welfare then there is less incentive for them to get a job. Take the feeling of security and then there is more incentive for them to get back into the working force and start producing products for the consumer to then boost the economy and get the country back on its feet.

Second. Yes I agree with the fact that the republicans like to keep their money in a pile in their house and just roll around in it, but the democrats are no better they do not know when to stop spending money. whatever they get the invest it into ideas that are bound to fail because I see the democrats wanting to fix the world even tho they can and the republicans just want to rob us of what we don't have.

Hey, class-envy and achievement-bashing "progressives", who don't want anybody in this country to GET wealthy, except with government jobs living off the producers like parasites, what say you about this letter to the NYT:

To the Editor:
Robert H. Frank’s article (“Taxing the Rich: It’s All Relative,” Economic View, Nov. 28), on the rationale for allowing tax cuts to expire for families’ income over $250,000, is focused on the wrong issue. It’s our spending that’s a problem, not the ability of the wealthiest to pay even more.
I want the wealthy to keep doing what they’re doing. Personally, I am happy I have spreadsheets (thank you, Bill Gates) and can order all my holiday gifts in 15 minutes (thank you, Jeff Bezos). The richest of the rich, in most cases, provide more value to the world via the items they create than any charity or government organization could dream of. Their wealth is an exact measure of the value they have provided to society.

That's your retort? Bankerrkt is spot on here. Funny part is, Obama and Bush have the same popularity/respect now. True, Bush is no Nobel Prize winner (which I don't get given Obama has spread more war than Bush did), but alas, he too is a Harvard man. The differnce is, one has balls on a golf range, the other in his pants. Don't believe me, just watch campaign footage and compare it to action - one had principles, one is a coward. You can make the connections, my mind is too lost due to all that Bush supporting.

Really? Do you not see all the clips of Obama, well, campaign Obama/up to October Obama, bashing the Bush Tax Cuts (soon to be Obama Tax Extensions). Your hope has blinded your judgement. Sad, yet sorta funny.
