12 Colleges With The Worst Professors

First Posted: 12/08/10 11:48 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

We've shown you where the nation's best professors toil -- but where are the worst ones hiding?

According to CBS Money Watch, they're at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Ouch.

The CBS list of 25 schools with subpar professors was determined using data from the Center for College Affordability and Productivity. The think tank combed through reviews on Rate My Professors, a user-generated website that features student evaluations of instructors.

The comprehensive (if subjective) site is also used in Forbes' college rankings.

If you're curious about how your school measured up, check out the complete rankings here (professor rating score is under the column titled "RMP").

Below are the top twelve institutions with the worst professors -- see CBS for the full list.

Are you surprised by these selections? If your school or alma mater is on the list, make a bid for it in the comments section.

Rate my professor dot com is a site where professors who are demanding of students usually get lower reviews. If that then is the basis for this article, I would most likely consider the professors anything but subpar, rather they are the ones who are doing the work that others who are trying to win a popularity contest do not.
We have crossed demanding academics with popularity contests that some go to any lengths to win.

US Merchant Marine Academy and Coast Guard Academy are not really mentionable in the same breath as the other academies.

this screening means little, if you have an expensive school with few numbers of students, it may end up here

We have known since teacher evaluation by students got started in the 70s that TES is just a complicated way of finding out which teachers were the most generous graders.

I am certain that Center for College Affordability and Productivity president Richard Vedder's huge staff of five carefully evaluated the entire faculties of the more than 3,000 institutions of higher education in the United States to develop this "subjective" list.  Since its founding 2006, this "think tank" has made its mark by feeding "research findings" to a variety of websites, which obviously have no understanding of how academia works.

I find it completely ridiculous that this article is based on RateMyProfessors.com, which is a worthless site devoted to students slandering their professors for getting the grade that they earned. Sorry that you got an F, maybe you should show up for class and not text when you are in lecture.

I agree for the most part. However, as my college isn't on the list I think this may hold some water. The Business & Science Department teachers continuously score in the 1.5 to 2 range for...and this is a travesty...requiring that students actually know how to add and subtract.

Really, NJIT??? I've had my share of professors on the undergrad and grad level. I've had a few bad professors but I also had excellent professors. Students pick engineering majors because they like to dream about all the $$ they will make as engineers once they graduate. MANY NJIT undergrads don't realize there's actual WORK involved. They complain and moan about the hard science and math classes. You PICKED an engineering major. It's not going to be easy. The professor is there to teach you, not baby you. If students want easier classes, pick an easier major.....

NJIT, considering its location in very depressed Newark NJ, and the abyssmal funding provided to it by the State Legislature has produced an extraordinarily talented number of engineers, computer scientists, physical scientists and architects.  Dr. Vedder and his dream team have never visited the campus.  Have never seen every single seat in the NJIT library filled by students studying or doing their research.

Vedders's Ph.D. in economics is from Ohio Univesity--hardly in the top rank of Ohio Universities and colleges such as Ohio State, Wright State, Kent State, Oberlin, Case Western Reserve, Antioch, University of Cincinnati, etc.

I don't get it. There are so many critical issues out there related to higher education and this section is always filled with fluff "top ten" lists that are pulled from thin air? Shoot, with the economy the way it is, who knows how much longer I'll have my faculty position ... sign me up and I'll take the job, Huff Po!

Including the words "if subjective" does not relieve you of the responsibility of having used one of the most worthless sources of information for judging the quality of professors at these schools. HP should be ashamed.

How can this be even considered a study or accurate portrayal by any sense? RateMyProfessor? Are you serious? I went to Bentley, one of the schools on this list and I must say from an Academic stance there was not one bad teacher. I will also say that when I was in school I used RateMyProfessor –I am not going to lie. I used it to figure out who the NICE ones were; as well as the easiest. That entire site is used as a forum for students to complain bout how HARD the teachers are on them and steer them away difficult classes. With that logic, some might even say that professors with the LOWEST score are in fact probably the BEST professors. I am not one of those people who take their school of choice to the heart and takes knocks at it personal. I just would hate to see someone cross a school of their list due to the articles claims. This list was based off of open-ended, irrational, and inaccurate “data.”

I don't see how anybody could take a site seriously where one of the criterions is "hotness," with a chili pepper.
