Stewart Mocks Obama, Democrats For Saying GOP Took Them Hostage

On Wednesday night's "Daily Show," Jon Stewart took aim at President Obama and the Democrats in Congress for their recent comments on the tax cut deal. After caving on extending the Bush tax cuts for those who make $250,000 a year in exchange for an extension of unemployment benefits, Democrats are making it sound as if they were held hostage.

Stewart showed a slew of clips where Dems like Sen. Chuck Schumer complained that the GOP was "literally holding middle class tax-payers hostage" and that it was "almost like dealing with terrorists." He also showed how Obama handled the analogy, where he justified the compromise by saying it becomes necessary to negotiate with hostage takers if the hostage gets harmed.

"So you wouldn't negotiate with hostage takers unless they threaten to harm the hostages," Stewart said. "Are you familiar with the hostage/captive dynamic?"

He also asked, "Doesn't this send the wrong message to Republicans?" That in order to get the legislation they want passed they just have to take "hostages"? Stewart doubted that true bipartisan cooperation could even exist when both parties are calling each other hostages and terrorists. Or can it?

For more, Stewart presented a fascinating report by John Oliver, about two opponents running for Connecticut state Senate who ran a campaign based on mutual respect and cooperation. Amazingly, they campaigned together and let the people decide who to vote for without even a little mudslinging. It sounds like a dream, but as you'll see in Oliver's hilarious report, they are real.
