This article is very relevant. I live in central PA in a county of about 35k.. Our library has joined with other libraries in PA to share the ebook collection. LOVE that I can borrow ebooks from my local library. I even did it while I was in France. The fact that I could borrow ebooks from my library was a major influence on my decision to buy an ereader.

This is great... if you happen to live in, say, Martha's Vineyard. For the rest of us, this article is stunningly irrelevant.

I suspect this will change as the tech becomes more common and less proprietary. When there's an affordable, universal reader, this may become the default for many types of books. I love hard copy books too much to make the leap yet, but am open to the possibility.

I suppose the idea is for you to check out (!) your local library to see if they offer e-books. You can also see if they've had layoffs and budget cuts. We're struggling to find a way to add e-books with a 50% cut in the materials budget since 2008. Circulation has of course increased dramatically given the economy, which means the books, CDs, and DVDs we do have are practically spinning and about to fall apart.
