UPDATE: Cathie Black says she was Mayor Bloomberg's first pick for schools chancellor.
"What he said to me is, 'You're the first person I've offered this job to,'" Black told Fox 5's "Good Day New York."

Before selecting Cathie Black as his new schools chancellor, Mayor Bloomberg reportedly offered the job to Geoffrey Canada.
Two sources confirmed to the New York Times that Canada, founder of the Harlem Children's Zone charter school network, was Bloomberg's first pick for the job.
That means Bloomberg may have been after a more traditional schools chancellor that would likely not have garnered the heated criticism that Black's appointment has generated.
Black has been derided for her lack of education experience and she had to be granted a waiver before being allowed to replace outgoing chancellor Joel Klein.
