Kathy Griffin, Chelsea Handler Defend Bristol Palin Joke (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/10/10 10:09 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Kathy Griffin appeared on Chelsea Handler's talk show, 'Chelsea Lately,' on Thursday night, giving a defiant defense of her controversial joke about Bristol Palin.

"I made several scandalous jokes, as I like to do -- and I stand by all of them," Griffin told Handler with a laugh.

Griffin, hosting the 'VH1 Divas Salute the Troops' on Friday night, talking about Bristol's apparent weight gain. "She gained like 30 pounds a week, I swear to God, it was fantastic. She's like the white Precious," she said amid a chorus of boos from troops in the audience.

The joke, she said, was just that -- not any sort of bullying (though she has antagonized Palin before, taking her ex-fiancee and father of her child, Levi Johnston, as her date to several events).

"I think it's ironic that somebody would call me a bully, when there's a big difference between being a comedian and bullying -- it's our job," she said. For her part on the matter, Handler called the remark, "Hilarious."

Handler recently came under fire herself for crude remarks about Angelina Jolie at a standup comedy show, calling her a, "F***king C**t, F**king B**ch."

"Bullying -- I hate that word, bullying, but I didn't know people were calling us that -- is being a bully to someone who's defenseless, a poor little person who's done nothing wrong, not the people who are a-------!" she said on the show Thursday.

Bottom line, comdians are mean, that's where they get their material from, making fun of other people. Bristol is trying to be a celebrity and she has the nerve to say I wanted to win DWTS so I could give everyone a big middle finger, that's tacky, and rude, how on earth do you think she's not going to be made fun of?

If Bristol Palin didn't want publicity, she could have stayed at home in Wasila with her kid, and got a job or just stayed in the background. She hasn't - she's actively worked HERSELF to become a public figure through her speaking engagements and work on shows like Dancing with the Stars. She's an adult and these are decisions she has directly made. So she has to deal with the potential resulting criticism or ridicule such as this. Can't have both fame and anonymity.

Ms. Griffin is smarter and sexier than either the Palin daughter or mother, and doesn't need four shots with a scoped high-velocity rifle to take down a defenseless, hopeless killed-for-teevee caribou.

It's not her first unfunny comment. Won't be her last.

I guess Bristol Palin never makes jokes about Kathy Griffin? Really?
01:29 PM on 12/13/2010
I hadn't heard the joke before, but gotta say it's friggin' hilarious. Bristol has been looking a lot like a Macy's Parade float lately, if you don't want to be made fun of then get out of the public eye.

I think calling Bristol Palin the white Precious is profoundly funny. Bristol Palin has been used by her mother as a prop.

That joke is aimed at Sarah Palin being a bad mother.

I think the joke was more about the fact that Bristol touted how hard she was working, how intense the practices were (which I know they are), and how she was working her butt off, yet she was getting bigger every week. It's funny because of how telling it is of how little she was probably doing/practicing or how much she was actually eating a day. Take it from an ex-dancer/cheerleader, there is nothing more rigorous than practicing routines for 6 hours a day for 7 straight days, each hour burning ~230 calories for a grand total of ~1380 calories burned each day of the week. That means that Bristol could have eaten ~3490 calories a day & maintained her weight (or eaten less & lost weight), but since she gained 15 pounds while on the show, that implies that she's been eating probably close to 4500 calories a day. & that is ridiculous. Kathy's just calling her out on her hypocrisy (& probably Sister Sarah's crusade against Michelle Obama's childhood obesity cause while her own child is clearly in need of help in that capacity).

It's so good we have comics who can encourage the troops the way Bob Hope once di...oh, what's that, you say? A chorus of boos? Hmmm....maybe comics should stay away from political humor when performing for America's soldiers. Good taste and all that.

Good taste? Bob Hope entertained in a time when our men were impregnating women overseas. This faux morality and good taste are bullsh*t.

Um...what? Bob Hope entertained in a time when the Nazis were slaughtering millions of innocents and attempting (almost successfully) world domination. WTF are you talking about "faux morality and good taste" for?
12:48 PM on 12/13/2010
There are women troops to entertain too, you understand. Bob's humor was--oh, here is a hot woman. Let me parade her around. hahahah. Funny, right?

Bob Hope was entertaining men who possibly hadn't seen a woman in months. His job was to boost troop morale in a time when women weren't allowed into combat; not to be all happy feely about women's issues. Hope did his job well. Griffin, quite obviously, does not.

I'm all for gender equality and less sexual objectification of women. However, there's a time and place for such things. The beaches of Normandy were the wrong place, and WWII was definitely the wrong time.

There are lots of very funny women doing great work right now but Griffin and Handler are not among them. They are both profoundly unfunny, devoid of anything resembling wit.
