Class rank is important for more than just wowing college admissions officers and securing bragging rights. According to new research, the better your grades were in high school, the healthier you are years later. It's not the first time that education has been associated with physical well-being -- more degrees equal better health -- but a study published in the December issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that it's not only more schooling but performance that makes a difference.

What are the demographics of the 1957 high school grads from that part of the country. Can the same study be done from the same year of people from NYC, DC, Detroit, or Newark. and see if the results will be the same.

Makes sense to me for the students who are trying to please themselves and want to do something of value with their life. Perhaps it is less true for the student who is driven by their parent to be the best and they can never quite do enough.

OK, such folks often eat better, keep up with health news and generally have jobs that permit more vacation and getaway time. Many come from higher income families who we know have longer life spans.

BUT most experienced high school teacherz will tell you horror stories about scores of these straight A kids who are a mess trying to please themselves, their parents and their teachers. Often the desire to get into an "elite college" is driven by parents. The pressure to get there is alarming and leads to all sort of tragedies. AGAIN, ONE ARTICLE IS NOT SOME FACT WRITTEN IN STONE. There are many nuances that are not considered here.

Okay. Really simple folks: when you have a formal degree (or just the ba//s to make your way in the world), you have a better job. When you have a better job, you have better health insurance. When you have better health insurance, you have better health. Intelligence has nothing to do with it.

Duh ..of course ...you think critically about things and are willing to take steps to take care of yourself and most likely you will have better paying gainful employment ...and as a direct result greater access to preventative health care.

good thing me little ones are getting straight A's ( proud pops beaming)

Correct "Duh" call, it's really a no-brainer. Guess the two of us are pretty healthy :-)

And congrats on the kids, i'm listening to Senator Sanders right now and i fear for your country, you will need a lot of brainy people in the future...

What a laugh. Happy? Who decides that? My husband is a therapist and sees a lot of kids who are so stressed out over grades in our unbelievably competitive state that they are ready to quit school altogether. Gotta agree with the poster below me that says they aren't invited to the best parties....

Probably 'cause you don't get invited to all the good parties where you might catch something that penicillin won't cure no more.
