Police Robot Breaks Into SUV In Milwaukee, Ending Standoff

MILWAUKEE — Officers sent in a robot they normally use to defuse explosives to break an SUV window and end a standoff that shut down a major Milwaukee freeway for six hours on Friday.

The robotic device, with its long tentacle, broke a rear window on the vehicle authorities suspected was stolen, and a deputy then used a long stick to drop in a canister of gas. The driver emerged in a cloud and laid down on the freeway as SWAT officers moved to handcuff him.

Deputies pulled a female passenger from the SUV as gas billowed out the door. Three police dogs, held back by deputies, barked loudly.

"Move away from the car! Roll! Roll!" a SWAT team member shouted to the driver with his gun trained on the man.

Authorities haven't said whether the suspects were armed or why they refused to come out of the SUV.

The standoff had begun at 4 a.m. when a Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy pulled up behind the SUV, which was stopped along westbound Interstate 94 near the city's major downtown interchange. The driver and passenger refused commands to come out of the vehicle.

More deputies and SWAT team officers converged near the vehicle – and the waiting began. Dozens of drivers got stuck on the freeway as authorities shut down the road.

Mark Gauger got caught in the mess at about 5 a.m. as he was on his way to work in nearby Waukesha.

"For the life of me, I never expected to see something like that at 5 a.m.!" Gauger told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I was one of the fortunate few that were able to reverse down the exit ramp."

Several hours into the standoff, deputies directed backed-up vehicles off the freeway.

When I saw the photo, I really thought R2D2 had saved the day. Too bad it wasn't him. I'd like to have him patrol my neighborhood, too.

Do the eds here who posted this in Chicago realize Chicago and Milwaukee are 2 different cities in 2 different states?
08:51 AM on 12/11/2010
Yeah but to be fair, there isn't a Milwaukee section on the site and Chicago is the closest city that DOES have a section. You'll see some news about Indiana on here, too. Brace yourself.

I live in Milwaukee and it was an incredible mess this morning, and hundreds of cars were stuck, not dozens. Lives were saved using the robot believe it or not, the only other options left were to either continue to wait or shoot. Does sound rather funny though, and the picture they chose to accompany it sure didn't help!

You are right about the number of cars that were tied up in this mess on the major freeway, during early rush hour, in the city. And the overpass streets were blocked by the SWAT team, so no traffic there either. The Sheriff's department did an excellent job of giving alternate routes to the newscasters but I bet there were a lot of late employees... with the most original "late" excuse ever!
The picture that HP paired with this article is just too funny. I can't get the image out of my head, of these two droids shuffling past the lunging police dogs to save the day.

I agree.
It was a mess and the ending was a safe one for all.
I did wonder why it took soooooooo long before making the decision
to bring in the robot and use gas.

They said they the windows were tinted and they could not see if there were any innocent kids in the back of the vehicle.

I think an ED-209 would have been way more effective.

RTFA.

I agree it was a silly choice of photo, though.

Someone tell them you can't send C3P0 into danger - the guy freaks out and runs, flailing his clumsy metal arms along the way!
