Acid Reflux: 13 Foods To Soothe The Burn (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 12/13/10 07:53 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

In "Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook & Cure," authors Jamie Koufman, M.D., Jordan Stern, M.D. and French master chef Marc Bauer take a healthy eating approach to reducing acid reflux.

The book's staple foods offer plenty of variety and are geared toward reducing acid reflux.

Turn your body into a heartburn-free zone by sticking with the following ingredients, which are featured in the book's 75 original, low-fat recipes.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is just about the best breakfast and any-time-of-day snack recommended by Jamie Koufman, M.D., Jordan Stern, M.D. and French master chef Marc Bauer, authors of "Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook & Cure."

It’s filling and doesn’t cause reflux.

Even instant oatmeal with raisins is “legal” because the oatmeal absorbs the acidity of the raisins.

Do not lie down for at least 90 mins after eating !!!!!

Keep the seal around that flap on your stomach healthy laying down lets the stomach acid hit the seal .
That what my Doctor told me and it worked stomach problem went away. I now work a few hours less so I am not eating late and going straight to bed.

What will soothe the burn is some good old exercising.

Gassy cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflour? I don't think so. That sounds like compounding the crime. And, as the joke goes, not many people eat parsley.

Great article! I suffered from severe acid reflux for years. Almost everything gave me heartburn including apples, oatmeal and many of the foods listed in this article. I eventually elected to have acid reflux surgery in 2005. While it did help some, I experienced horrible side effects from my reflux surgery. I thought surgery would be a "quick fix" but it was not - now I understand that surgery does not fix the underlying problem - it just addresses the symptoms. With some time and research, I now believe that most people can attack their acid reflux without dangerous drugs or surgery.

RAW CULTURED VEGETABLES!!! Google it. Raw, NOT pasteurized sauerkraut and Kim Chi are extremely alkalizing in the body and soothe if not completely eliminate heartburn even after it starts. Eat enough raw sauerkraut and you can pretty much eat or drink anything else you want. Google "Raw Cultured Vegetables," educate yourself, then run, don't walk to your nearest health food store and ask for them. You can also order online, or for the adventurous, you can make your own at home, you can find the recipe online, of course. I recommend a product called Vegi-Delite Zing Salad. It will relieve heartburn almost instantly, lasting for hours even when 5 antacids wouldn't help, as well as assist elimination due to the potent concentration of probiotics and fiber. Try it, and tell everyone you know about it.

Unfortunately the causes and triggers for reflux vary significantly from person to person. No doubt that fried and fat-laden foods exacerbate the condition, but not all the foods suggested above are helpful for all sufferers.

If you suffer mild occasional reflux symptoms in response to food or other triggers (don't even think about smoking) these suggestions may be useful to you. If you're suffering regular, painful episodes that can cause discomfort well after the event, then you need to consider treatment with PPIs, particularly for those who's triggers are not always diet-related (time-of-day, exercise, sleeping position, anxiety). The improvement in quality of life is dramatic, and it lowers the risk of Barret's and associated cancers.

The one food that gives me horrible reflux is pizza. I cannot eat it after 4pm because I won't be able to lie down to go to sleep.

RAW CULTURED VEGETABLES. Eat enough raw sauerkraut or Kim Chi, and they are so alkalizing in the body that you can pretty much eat whatever else you want. Even spicy buffalo wings brother. Raw, NOT pasteurized. Google it, read about it, then buy or make your own raw cultured veggies. You won't believe that you've been suffering all this time for no reason. It will work even when antacids don't.

um... couscous (except whole wheat couscous, which is probably 5% of all couscous sold) is not a complex carbohydrate, I don't believe. It's really no different than any other pasta.

I have great experience with blackberries, raspberries, any green salad (such as lettuce, spinach or arugula) and avocado. I also find that acai juice and soy milk work better than antacids.

Absolute no-nos: ANY orange juice, lemonade, commercially made pasteurized fruit juices, Cadbury chocolate, ice cream, Sarah Palin speeches and Eric Cantor in any shape, form or quantity.
