Destination Of The Day: Tunisia (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 12/15/10 08:08 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

When planning a trip to North Africa, the Mediterranean country of Tunisia is easily dwarfed by tourist hot spots Morocco and Egypt. But this tiny, underrated destination is packed with enough history and natural beauty to rival its formidable neighbors - from the ancient Roman city of Carthage to the quaint artist town of Sidi Bou Said, the fascinating troglodyte homes of Matmata to lush oases, enormous salt lakes, luxurious beach resorts, and remarkably well-preserved medinas or old towns, Tunisia is the Sahara's hidden jewel.

Tunisia has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Visiting is best in springtime, between mid-March and mid-May, while the summers are great for beach vacations and the fall for desert trips.

I visited Tunis, Tunisia via the Straight of Gilbralter. What a great city! I rode a camel on the outskirts of town for the first time in my life. The food is so exotic and spicy quite delicious. I would love to go back and visit one day very soon but in the mean time. Setting the mood for those wonderful photos. Thanks!

A Night In Tunisia

The moon is the same moon above you
Aglow with its cool evening light
But shining at night in Tunisia
Never does it shine so bright.
The stars are aglow in the heavens
But only the wise understand
That shining at night in Tunisia
They guide you through the desert sand.
Words fail to tell a tale
Too exotic to be told
Each night's a deeper night
In a world ages old.
The moon is the same moon above you
Aglow with its cool evening light
But shining at night in Tunisia
Never does it shine so bright

Tunisia is an amazing country with some beautiful sights. I recommend the old fort in Monastir.

I just got back from a business trip to Tunis. I didn't see stuff half as impressive as most of these shots in the one day I got to site see. I do recommend checking out Carthage, and the Villas Romaine, though.

Carthage is one of the boring spots in Tunsia, and the Museum is a disappointment
