Kind Fairy: Ukraine Drinking Buddies For Hire

A Ukraine firm is offering a solution to those who find themselves feeling down and out around the holidays. For 150 Ukrainian hryvnias (or about $18), locals can guarantee themselves an evening of good conversation and revelry by hiring a drinking buddy, the AFP is reporting.

Officials at Kind Fairy, a Ukrainian event-planning firm in the industrial Dniprodzerzhynsk, say they started offering drinking buddies for hire last December, and the service quickly became one of the company's most popular. "Virtually all of our people are talented," said Yulia Peyeva, head of Kind Fairy. "They can play guitar, sing or recite poetry. Today you may want to talk about art and tomorrow to read Faust."

The firm, whose staff includes some psychologists, is also popular among locals who are reluctant to seek therapy, though it does not does encourage binge drinking, nor should it be considered a matchmaking or escort service.

Why pay to have a drinking buddy?

While I am a faithful and semi-responsible married guy now, there was a time when my 3rd eye ruled my life.

Many a night I've gone Passport Trolling in Ukraine. Costs nothing but the alcohol and maybe a dinner, and if you play it right she'll cook you breakfast.

This perhaps, is one of the coolest things I have heard of in a long time. Personally, I am sick of going to some bar in the East Village hoping to meet some intelligent indivudals only to be yelled at by someone saying, 'Have you heard Kanye West's new song??'...The answer is no, I have not. I would rather talk to someone who has something interesting to say, or has skills outside of pounding down a PBR...

Maybe the bars should do something similar in the U.S. and have some kind of "intellectual" ratings, i.e. this bar is frequented mostly by writers and poets and the other one by rednecks.

Couldnt agree more! I think Yelp! or NYMAG needs to consider ammending their websites to accomodate people looking for nightlife AND the desire for brain stimulation.
