Christians and atheists are fighting again -- this time over who can raise more money for charity.

The Christian and atheist communities on the online forum Reddit are in a battle to raise the most money for their causes. In the spirit of Christmas (or in atheists' case, human generosity), community members are even donating money to each other's groups.

The Reddit.com social networking site allows users to rate the popularity of various websites, as well as join like-minded communities, including groups like reddit.com/r/christianity and reddit.com/r/Atheism.

Nearly $45,000 has been raised as of Thursday (Dec. 16) through the communities' fundraising pages at FirstGiving.com. Now Reddit's Muslim community has entered the competition, with some donations coming from members of Reddit's Christianity and Atheism groups.

It all started Dec. 8 when Margaret Crymes, a 26-year-old member of Reddit's Christian group from Fullerton, Calif., suggested to the community that it raise money for the Christian relief group World Vision.

"If every member of r/Christianity donates just $4.45, we can build a health clinic in an impoverished area that desperately needs one," she wrote.

Within hours, a member of Reddit's Atheism page posted a response: "If r/Christianity builds a hospital in the Third world, we are going to build 10! Let the X-mas Wars and the overall battle for goodness in the world begin!"

On Dec. 9, a member of the atheist group set up a fundraising page for the group Doctors Without Borders on the charitable donation site FirstGiving.com. Crymes, after encouraging members of the Christian group to donate to the atheists' campaign, created her own FirstGiving page to support World Vision, which in turn gained support from Reddit's
atheist members.

Three days later, an inspired member of Reddit's Islam group created a FirstGiving page to raise money for the charitable group Islamic Relief.

As of Dec. 16, the 105,587 members of the atheist group had raised $32,802 of their $42,000 goal. The Christian group, with 9,017 followers, had raised $11,443 toward its $12,000 goal. The Muslim group, with 2,224 followers, had raised $360 of its $5,000 goal.

"At first I was worried this would turn into a big war ... but this is a friendly thing," Crymes said. "If it means that two communities that historically have animosity towards each other can tone it down for a while, that's great."

What a great way to channel the ego driven insanity of religion vs irreligion!

Atheists can't be good. They don't have god. People without gods are immoral. Immoral people only care about themselves and have no guide like the bible in which to live like a good person.

And there is no way atheists should raise more money than Christians - there is 5 times more Christians.

Kidding aside, it's good to see charity is something that can be agreed upon.

If you're christian, congrats. Do your thing, for whatever reasons you choose, and for whatever reward you believe you will receive. But while you're being all charitable and stuff, please stop worrying about us atheists, universalists, humanists or agnostics. We're happy to do whatever good we can, unbound by the trappings of your religion. In all the times I've answered my door on a Saturday morning, I can't recall there ever being an atheist on the porch trying to convert me.

Wow...didn't know there was a competition. I just give to those charities I feel will help. Nobody ever asked me whether I was an atheist. Maybe it doesn't matter. There is nothing about not believing in gods, goddesses, trolls under bridges, or leprechuans...that means I don't care for my feloow human beings. Love your neighbor is way, way older than Christianity...(sigh)

But you forget that Christianity expanded on who your neighbor should be.

And I ask, as in the above article, why did it take a Christian effort on charity to stir the atheists to do likewise? If secular humanists are as caring as they claim it shouldn't have required the former to show them the way. Atheist organizations up to now have been spending money on negative items regarding Christmas such as placing ads on billboards and buses attacking the season's meaning. That shows more about the latter's nature than any belated attempt to compete with Christians in the charitable sphere.

Good grief. Damned if we do, damned if we don't - you really are something. Let your hate shine though.

Just stating things as I see it. The question I posed is a valid one but instead of answering it you attack me personally while hypocritically accusing me of being hateful. Take a look in the mirror.

wow, you're so understanding and open minded. good grief, this was a harmless story about two groups in a friendly competition to raise money for charity.

Certainly showing more understanding than you.
From the article, "Within hours, a member of Reddit's Atheism page posted a response: "If r/Christianity builds a hospital in the Third world, we are going to build 10! Let the X-mas Wars and the overall battle for goodness in the world begin!"
While generally donations to charities that intend to help the poor and disavantage are normally done with good intentions, the above sentiment articulated above shows that the competitiveness has more to do with attempting to show that atheism can outdo Christianity on the social "usefulness" scale. I would also add that while I donate to various charities I would be reluctant to donate to any new ones of whatever persuasion without knowing who is running them, what their backgrounds in charitable raising are, and what their cost/expensive ratios are for the charities.

Just as long as Pat Robertson does not receive any of the money for his Blood Diamond Mines, I'm okay with this.

Letter to the mentally unstable people (both atheists and theists), why do you need to always voice you hatred for each-other? Talk about neither the time or the place.

Go Team Atheist!!!!!! :)

In a perverse sorta way, this could turn out to be a really good thing....Maybe that's what life's all about, channelling Christian vs. Atheist hate in a positive direction.

Go Team Atheist!!

If it's charity to help the less fortunate I'm all for it, whether it be done by the religious or atheists or the undecided....

Canadian here who contributed on behalf of /r/Christianity. Reddit is an intentional community, so it's a bit arrogant to claim "America at its finest." Perhaps "humanity at its finest?"

Charity is not meant to be an exercise in chest-thumping to show off who's a better person. It's meant to be a humble expression of love and caring for another human being that transcends ego, not inflates it. That's what Jesus taught.
02:28 AM on 12/18/2010
It wasn't. The headline is very misleading. You may want to check out one of the earlier threads on reddit here: http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/ejnbg/dogs_and_cats_living_together_mass_hysteria/

All three communities worked together to raise money, and very, very few people (mostly outliers) consider this a real competition. :-)

It's doesn't matter why the charity happens as long as it happens....besides when christians give to charity it inflates their egos also by making them think that they are somehow "better" than anyone else.
