WikiLeaks: Dalai Lama Says Climate Change, Not Politics, Should Be Focus In Tibet

Jason Burke in Delhi   12/17/10 06:25 AM ET   AP

Dalai Lama

NEW DELHI — A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable says the Dalai Lama told American officials that the issue of Tibet's political future should be temporarily shelved in favor of concerns over climate change.

The cable sent from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi last year says the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader appealed to the U.S. to reach out to China on climate issues in Tibet.

The cable said the Dalai Lama, who seeks more autonomy for the Himalayan region, indicated that political talks with Beijing can be sidelined for five or 10 years but addressing the mountains' melting glaciers, deforestation, and increasingly polluted water could not wait.

The cable was obtained by WikiLeaks and released Friday by The Guardian newspaper.

I hate to contradict him, but there won't be much progress against climate change without social harmony. Preserving Tibetan culture against Chinese cultural imperialism must remain the priority in Tibet. The political boundaries of Tibet aren't as important as preserving Tibetan language and tradition, in that order.

The Da Lie Lama, and his family, have been on the CIA payroll since the early 1950s. He says and does nothing his handlers do not want him to say. If he says that climate is now more important than politics, it is because that is what the state depd script calls for.

WARNING: No, I am not a pinky commie fink, nor am I brainwashed, nor am I paid to say this. This info is available on line, and in books publ;ished in the US. It is in many declassified documents, and of course in Congressinal Testimony.

The strange but true fact is tha Da Lie Lama is a paid tool of the USA.

Again, I like how these leaked cables continue to make the good guys actually look like good guys. Transparency is obviously a good thing. I'm not surprised by this one bit, even to the point that it doesn't even seem like a "leak".

Dalai Lama is a wise man who leads responsibly. He spends little time denying the obvious or building his OWN personal empire. He is an honorable man. By, I just wonder, why the old men in this country are just bitter and uninspiring as they age. Or like Barbour of Mississippi just devolve into convenient memory loss.

As you describe the Da Lie Lama, he sseems like a great man, so, I wonder why he refused, for 9 years, to emancipate his over 6000 serfs and 107 slaves? Now that China has emancipated them, why has the Da Lie Lama failed to apologise to them? Just wondering, since you claime he is such a great man.

Now that is a leader who is thinking about the needs of the people, their environment, and the consequences to all humanity first. If all governmental leaders could think as selflessly, humanity might stand a chance of long-term survival.

You've got it the wrong way around, and I don't think you have much of a leg to stand on accusing this guy of not caring about the suffering of his people. In this case, he's just exhibiting acceptance of reality and deep caring for the long-term welfare of his people.

How unChristian of the Dalai Lama! To push a Socialist agenda simply because the glaciers are melting, the forests disappearing. We ought to send Sen. James Imhofe over there to bring a little Christian Enlightenment.
09:03 AM on 12/18/2010
The extreme right will say that the dalai lama is pushing an agenda for maitreya, whom many of them think is the antichrist. I have already heard them talking about it. Maitreya is coming forth to push his socialist green agenda. I am getting frustrated with these people. They are getting more and more support and the outlook for our home is looking worse and worse. I probably will not be around to see it but I hate to think that my grandchildren may have to pay for our actions, ignorance, and our inaction. It is so frustrating when all we have to do is make very simple changes in the way we live and take care of our home. What happened to us?
08:52 AM on 12/19/2010
Buddha Maitreya will only come when the last Buddha's (Shakyamuni's) teachings have vanished and no one even remembers that there was a Buddhadharma. So if the evangelicals want to delay the coming of the Antichrist, they ought to lend support to Buddhist institutions to ensure that Buddhism remains around for a long, long time.

nono - he's saying put a PAUSE on that and turn the attention of your capslock button to climate change.

That way when we do get around to a free tibet, it'll still be habitable. The country's on the edge of survivability as is, it can't really afford a serious change in its climate.

i can still want a free tibet. i have friends there. i have been yelping for years about what the chinese are doing ecologically. i can still want a free tibet and the panchen lama free.
07:41 PM on 12/18/2010
We can multitask, and it's not very wise to abandon the demand for a free Tibet. It's very easy to get a skewed picture from one leaked document, especially given Dalai Lama's life work for his people.
