LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After the devastating earthquake rocked Haiti earlier this year, food and medical aid poured into the island country, but in the months that followed a pair of Hollywood actresses and their friends had another idea. They wanted to build a movie theater.

If you are looking for a unique way to make a difference, This Holiday Season, Give a Cow!

I grew up in what used to be called the third world. Hence, I am cynical about non-profit organizations claiming to have discovered solutions to end world hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. Heifer International is an organization I connected with the first time I read their mission statement. It’s a simple idea that involves, metaphorically speaking, giving a cow versus a cup. While a cup will only give a quick fix, a cow empowers and gives both self-reliance and long term hope. Now comes the tricky part.

How do you inspire people to give a Heifer gift this holiday season?

My question was also asked as part of a film contest organized by Heifer International. A young Columbia University freshman, Nicole Bleuel, sent me the video she produced and asked what I thought. This was my response:

The Ingredients for a great Ad?

A great Product I LIKE: Heifer International.

A great Idea I LIKE: Give the Heifer experience with an imaginative new twist.

An ‘Aha’ moment I LIKE: No, don’t give an entire Heifer – give what you can afford to give, because whether you can only give a little or you can give a lot, every person in our global community can play some role in giving in the Heifer experience.

Will this theater show anything other than Arnold Schwarzenegger movies?

Maria Bello----> Clearly the most under rated actress in film.

She is such an attractive woman and her heart is in helping people. She is a very cool

HA! Ain't they just the best? Working on their cred for a TeaPubliNazi political career when they grow up, no doubt....

Are you stoned? Put down the bong, you've clearly had enough. Since when does disaster relief (even if it seems stupid) justify a comment like yours?
Besides, if you look up the group they're involved with (from the full Reuters story) "Bello, 43, and Wilde, 26, both advisory board members of Artists for Peace and Justice..." the name alone should suggest that it's not any kind of conservative leaning organization, let alone some kind of "TeaPubliNazi" whatever out of your imagination.
From their Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Artists-for-Peace-and-Justice/279861008884

"Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ), established in early 2009, is a fundraising effort founded by Paul Haggis and friends that encourages peace and social justice and addresses issues of poverty and enfranchisement in communities around the world."

I have to admit, it sounds pretty stupid to me, there's no houses or clean water, people are living under tarps, people are dying, parents watching their kids dying, and the answer is "Let's build a movie theater!"? WTF? They better be showing some really funny stuff to make people forget there's no clean drinking water.

"...we saw increasing violence, rape and all the alcohol and drug use going on."
About this point, Bill Clinton should be suggesting "Midnight Basketball" again.
