Europe Snow Storm Closes Airports: London Heathrow Closed Until Sunday

London Heathrow

DAVID STRINGER   12/18/10 04:01 PM ET   AP

LONDON — Blizzards and freezing temperatures shut down runways, train tracks and highways across Europe on Saturday, disrupting flights and leaving shivering drivers stranded on roadsides.

Airports in Britain, Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark reported cancelations or delays to flights.

London's Gatwick airport reopened late afternoon after 150 employees using dozens of plows worked to clear the runway of 10 centimeters (four inches) of snow, though officials warned flights would be limited and cancelations likely.

Heathrow Airport will remain shut until Sunday after snow and ice forced the closure of runways, according to a statement on its website.

"There are likely to be significant knock-on delays tomorrow (Sunday) and you should contact your airline before traveling to the airport," the statement said.

Conditions on British roads were treacherous, Automobile Association official Darron Burness said. "One of the biggest problems is that large amounts of snow are falling very quickly on to frozen surfaces, making driving hazardous," he said.

Hundreds of motorists were left stranded on a major road in northwestern England following a deluge, prompting police patrols to offer food and water to drivers.

Jeremy Clarkson, host of BBC motoring program "Top Gear" said he was among drivers forced to abandon their vehicles close to Oxford, west of London. "It was very bad out there," he said.

In Italy, the Autostrada of the Sun – the country's main north-south highway – was jammed with hundreds of vehicles, whose chilly occupants slept in their cars, vans or trucks. Though snow had mainly cleared or melted early Saturday, the highway was still closed in one direction, with traffic backed up for nearly 25 miles (40 kilometers).

The snowfall also forced high-speed trains to bypass Florence's central Santa Maria Novella station, stopping in suburban stations instead.

Paris was sprinkled with a light coat of snow overnight, as many people prepared to set off on their Christmas vacations. More snow was predicted Saturday, leading civil aviation authorities to cancel 15 percent of flights at Charles de Gaulle airport between 4 p.m. (1500 GMT, 10 a.m. EST) and 11 p.m. (2200 GMT, 5 p.m. EST).

Many flights were also canceled in northeastern France, where snow already blanketed the ground, and services were also canceled at the airports in the cities of Nantes and Rennes.

Significant numbers of domestic and European flights were canceled at Germany's Frankfurt airport as it dealt with the disruption. Germany's railway operator Deutsche Bahn said it was pressing into service all the trains it could – though some journeys were subject to delays. "Everything that can roll is rolling," spokesman Holger Auferkamp told the German news agency DAPD.

The icy weather also swept over large parts of Scandinavia, causing problems particularly in Denmark, where dozens of flights were canceled at the airport in Copenhagen. According to Danish news agency Ritzau, train traffic between Denmark and southern Sweden was also disrupted because of track problems, partly due to the snow, forcing passengers to instead take buses between the two countries.

In Sweden, where media reports suggest the country is experiencing the coldest winter weather this early on in the season since the mid-1800's, several road accidents were reported, with more than 20 in the Stockholm area alone.

Retailers said the poor weather would likely dent sales on what it traditionally the busiest shopping weekend before Christmas. London's Brent Cross indoor shopping mall closed its doors early Saturday afternoon.

Elsewhere, a snowman greeted tourists at London's Camden Market, while traders broke up ice and snow with shovels on the cobblestone paths. Two groups of tourists hurled snowballs at each other across the canal on the edge of the market.

Britain may experience its coldest December on record, weather service forecaster Mark Seltzer said.

"Temperatures will struggle to get over freezing and although the snow should ease off tonight, it will return to eastern areas on Sunday," he said.

Police in Leicester, central England, said the snowy weather had helped uncover a cannabis factory in the city. Officers raided the premises after spotting that snow had melted on the building's roof as a result of heat from industrial-strength lights used in the cultivation of the drug.

Horse racing meetings and dozens of soccer games in England and Scotland were called off as a result of the conditions, including a high profile match scheduled for Sunday in London between Chelsea and Manchester United.

Which city is farther north, Rome or New York City ?

People don't realize just how far north Europe actually is.
'Global warming' includes disruption of the Gulf Stream
due to meltwater from Greenland. Europe freezing down
does not mean we are not experiencing global warming.

This is a comment posted to a web site I use. Can Huff Post look into this? I'm sure this group isn't the only ones effected.
"My kid is stranded in London along with other 45 University of Evansville students. I just need to vent a little bit. British Airway cancelled all flights last Saturday.
First, they told the kids that it was snowing hard in Chicago. We were in Chicago waiting and not a single flake of snow was falling.
Then they say that the problem was in the airport in London, but it wasn't snowing there either.
At this time, my son is still there and they are getting nothing from BA. They are sleeping in the floor, and some are already getting sick because of the cold.
They will be lucky if then can be back before Christmas. At this time they have no flight scheduled.
British Airways has done absolutely nothing for them. They closed the desks at the airport and they have nobody helping and supporting the kids."

Hi there,
I just reached my destination which was supposed to take 12 hours in total- after 4.5 days. I was alone, a young female on this trip. We were told on Sat that we can stay in Transit so I got comfortable only to be told after waiting for my flights that everything is cancelled and after around 8-9 we were kicked out of the transit area. I wonder why they waited till the night to inform everyone. Then all the staff disappeared in thin air- while the passengers were left to adjust in the arrival area on the floor. The transit was shut down due to snow and with no way of getting out we were really trapped. The people that made money through the misery were the restaurants, cafes, the airport, the hotels. I started to think whether its a scam. Then there's the heathrow twitter that constantly repeats the message" hi so and so check with your airlines". Everyone's busy blaming each other while the passengers struggle but have to keep spending to survive. We received a compensation of 7 pounds 50 pence. It's all a joke really. The airport treats us like criminals threatening to call the police if anyone asks questions or breaks down. I'm sorry, where is the human rights?

When my daughter asked me this summer, if I would come to celebrate Christmas with them in Germany, I said, no, I do not like sitting in airports waiting to leave weather permitting. Told her summer was better, I am glad I did so. Now look at all these travelers, who have to sit and sleep at these airports.

Ten years ago, climate scientists in the UK were predicting with considerable certainty that, in the UK, snow would soon be a thing of the past, that schoolchildren would grow up not knowing what snow was due to impending global warming. Well, obviously they were wrong. Not just a little wrong but a whole lot wrong just as today's climate scientists will likely be proven wrong in another ten years, or less. And so it goes. Don't be drawn into their web of deceit.

Here's the report dated March of 2000. It's all very funny really! Or it would be if it weren't costing us billions of wasted dollars.

So, in your mind ABQ, one cold snap disproves known science on the matter? I think the overall global trend is clear. Although, I will concede some wiggle room on this subject. It seems UK weather depends upon the Atlantic deep sea currents, and the future pattern of those currents is uncertain. So, UK and Europe may indeed develop cold climate, even while the globe warms. Chaos you know.

this is not airport's fault. you can not fight the nature.

The world's so-called largest airport frozen by 15 cm snow.. It should be headlines with an emphasis on how much snow.. i'm utterly surprised by the inefficient system that has caused this gridlock. today's my 3rd day waiting for a flight among the 1000s of passengers.

Britain should be highly embarrassed! It's being treated like a natural catastrophe.. simply waiting for the snow to melt itself. i cant believe it! and on top no compensation, no apology, not even taking the blame. its wonderful observing this mess!

Flights, Trains Cancelled Across Europe
Snow caused major problems at airports like Heathrow. Holiday travelers have been stranded across the continent, and Lady Gaga was forced to cancel a concert. http://www.newslook.com/videos/276364-flights-trains-cancelled-across-europe?autoplay=true

Well, here’s your chance to play scientist.  Given the fact that each of the last 10 years has featured in the top 11 warmest years recorded in all datasets, when the 2010 data is processed, do you think 2010 will turn out to have been one of the 10 hottest years on record?  Could 2010 even turn out to be the #1 hottest year on record?  Or will this cold snap in Europe make 2010 one of the coldest years on record?  What is your prediction?

We have about 30cm of snow here in Germany (near Düsseldorf) and it is still snowing like crazy. Had to drive about 300km through Germany today on the Autobahn, was great fun, full Autobahn covered in snow.
Fastest I could drive was 110kmh, God bless ESP (electronic stability control).

At least Europe has airlines and facilities to handle these situations and take care of passengers. Unlike in the US. Where most would be left to a Chili's and useless airline agents.

Don't be so sure. I was stuck in CDG in Paris 2009 early January, right after the holidays. There was a mere 'dusting' of snow [ you could easily see the tarmac outside the windows] and Air France cancelled ALL their flights. I passed the night sitting on the floor of a ladies room, no pillow, no blanket, no available hotel rooms...booked solid we were told. The heat turned off in the airport. Meanwhile a US Airways flight to where I was going did take off without incident. Nearly 48 hours there and almost out of euros. I waited in line at the only open food concession next morning forever and getting to the person waiting on customers was told the credit card machine was out of order and didn't have enough euros so I asked if he would accept a 20 dollar american bill. He did and I got a coffee and a small pastry and he gave me 3 euros change. Helped himself to a grand tip. I'll never go through Paris again.

You may wish to look at:
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/bams-state-of-the-climate/2009-time-series/sst
for a graph of ocean surface temperatures going back quite a few years. Please show me where the temperatures are 'cooling down' over the last decade?!? (or even the last century as a whole).
But of course, this scientific information comes from a Federal source (NOAA) and is must therefore be completely false (LOL).
Don't let the facts blur your 'knowledge'
03:21 PM on 12/19/2010
Even government data cannot necessarily be trusted, as shown by the publication of hacked emails from activist global warming scientists last year. Data is often "corrected" to remove anomolies or neutralize other effects. Anyone who wants to show a trend (and NOAA itself has a number of activist scientists) simply "correct" the data to show the trend they want. It's all in the emails.

Media Not Excited Anymore About Debunked Climategate Scandal

It seems a couple of hacked emails taken out of context is all some people need to claim AGW is a hoax.

Sorry, but those hacked emails didn't show any of bad or falsified data.  Not one scintilla.

Pleaseee! Everybody knows that the satellite records are the only ones you can trust not the adjusted manipulated data. Go to the UAH site and check out the ocean data and then try to come back with some junk propaganda. The eye doesn't lie. The eye being the satellites.
