Magic Trade For Gilbert Arenas: Orlando Acquires Hedo Turkoglu & Jason Richardson From Suns

Magic Suns Wizards Trade

ANTONIO GONZALEZ   12/18/10 11:16 PM ET   AP

ORLANDO, Fla. — So much for another tweak.

A rough patch early this season was enough to convince the Orlando Magic that perhaps they weren't good enough to contend in the Eastern Conference after all. They acquired troubled guard Gilbert Arenas from the Washington Wizards and Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson from the Phoenix Suns in a major roster shake-up Saturday.

The Magic sent forward Rashard Lewis to Washington and Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat to Phoenix in a separate trade. Orlando also gave Phoenix its 2011 first-round draft pick and cash and received Suns forward Earl Clark .

"We needed a little bit more punch," Magic president Otis Smith said. "All those guys coming in have an ability to move the ball. After looking at our team through 25 games, we were missing a little something. I thought change was needed."

The overhaul was a major move for a franchise that began the season believing it had all the pieces for its first championship.

Instead, Orlando had lost five of its last six games to drop from first to fourth in the Eastern Conference. The slide was magnified by winning streaks of 11 by Miami and 12 by Boston, a ripple effect that was enough to force Orlando to revamp the roster again with a player looking for a second chance of his own.

"I'm just glad to be back in the playoff hunt," Arenas said. "I've been out of it for a while and just glad to be back in competitive basketball with a group of guys who now hope to win, so it's just great."

This is a do-over in many ways for the Magic, too.

After losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finals in the 2008-09 season, the Magic parted ways with Turkoglu – a fan favorite who went to Toronto – and traded with New Jersey to get Carter. The decision turned out to be a disaster; Carter struggled mightily in Orlando's disappointing exit in the East finals last season against Boston.

An early season skid forced Smith to reverse course.

"I don't think it's admitting a mistake," he said. "I don't regret breaking up the finals team. I think it was the right decision at the time."

The Wizards and Suns were happy to part ways with pieces that didn't pan out.

Arenas was suspended 50 games last season for bringing a gun into Washington's locker room. He also faked an injury to sit out a preseason game this year, and his often critical remarks were a distraction for a young team now centered on No. 1 overall pick John Wall.

"We're totally in a rebuild," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said. "We've said that. We were in a situation where we had three of our top players play pretty much the same position in John (Wall) and Gilbert and Kirk (Hinrich)."

For the Suns, the deal was the first significant move pulled off by their new front office of president Lon Babby and general manager Lance Blanks. The deal addresses Phoenix's glaring weaknesses: a lack of size and poor defense.

"Carter and Pietrus give us a great defensive presence on the perimeter and they should be extremely dynamic offensively. And, of course, I think we all recognize that we had a need here for an increased interior presence, size and rebounding," Babby said. "And Gortat is really someone that we've had our eye on since we got here."

The Magic made strong pushes to acquire Denver's Carmelo Anthony or New Orleans' Chris Paul, but after little progress, they began seeking other options.

Smith has been a close friend and mentor to Arenas going back to their days at Golden State, when Smith was in the front office and Arenas was a young player. Richardson was also with the Warriors for most of that time.

One thing Smith said he's not concerned about is Arenas' off-the-court troubles.

"We have a tendency not to forgive people in this country," he said. "We have a tendency to hold onto things a little bit longer, particularly if they play professional sports."

Of bigger concern than the off-court problems was the three-time All-Star's constant knee problems, which limited Arenas to 47 games the previous three seasons. Healthy again, Arenas has averaged 17.3 points and 5.6 assists this year.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said point guard Jameer Nelson will remain the starter. And among Arenas, Richardson and Turkoglu, one player will have to come off the bench.

For now, the trades leave the Magic without a proven backup center.

"That's the one thing in the move that I think Otis and I both had concerns with," Van Gundy said. "We think it was worth the gamble."

I'm not too sure I'm digging this deal from a Magic perspective.

Despite all adjusting the Magic lack a good head coach. Contenders or pretenders? We shall see come playoff time.

This is the biggest "moving-pieces-around-that-ultimately-won't-change-anything-but-hey-we-gotta-try-something" trade since the last "moving-pieces-around-that-ultimately-won't-change-anything-but-hey-we-gotta-try-something" trade. Antwan Jamison to the Cavs*, I believe was the last one (weird that the Wiz were involved in that one too).

There's no cap-space-saving, meaningful draft picks (although you can argue that a good team will trade any draft pick into a meaningful one), or relevant game-changing players involved (Arenas, Carter, JRich, Hedo and Lewis are all about a combined-20 years removed from their days of having significant effects on games, Gortat may be a diamond in the rough for the Suns though).

Each team is aware that their best hope is that somehow this group of players will develop a better chemistry than the previous one did. I'm so glad the Bulls aren't in this "trading for the sake of trading" phase.

* - I feel obligated to bring up that Amar'e Stoudemire was to be had at the time that the Cavs dealt for Jamison. Except, the Cavs didn't want to deal JJ Hickson (!). If they had gotten Stoudemire, they would probably have some combination of A) championship, B) Lebron, C) Stoudemire, D) looooootta cap space.

Not sure why a contender like Magic would take Arenas, a guy who rarely gives 100%, and his body is never 100%.

As a Suns fan, I actually felt it was a good trade. But then, the management was merely making amendments to the mistake they've made in trading for Hedo. In the end of the day, we traded Hedo for cap space WHICH we had before getting rid of Barbosa. The management has absolutely no idea what they were doing. We all know Hedo is an extremely one-dimensional player. He needs the ball in his hand to be not ineffective, and then we also have Steve Nash who happens to be one of NBA's greatest point guards ever. We brought in a player whose contract was not worth any of his talents and can't co-exist with our franchise player.
I truly believed in Lon Babby and Lance Blanks. For once in my life I believed even with a cheap owner, we can contend. In the end of the day, the owner's still cheap and management still delusional. Don't ever ever be a Suns fan. Go watch the Lakers or something.

Oh and on Orlando's side, the acquisitions are extremely high-risk-high-reward. JRich has always been good off-the-ball so no worries about him, but for Arenas and Hedo, who both need the ball in their hands, I'm not so sure. They both have long and insanely huge contracts as well so it's going to be difficult to unload them if things don't work out. Either case, the Magic is going to be fun to watch.

Make all the trades, the lakers are going to three peat and that's that. Kobe will get his 6th baby

Accepting Vince Carter on your team is the seventh sign that you don't have any interest in winning games during crunch time.

This trade makes Orlando terrifying and makes the Suns actively, horribly worse. I don't get why they did it. Hedo has thrived against one team, the Celtics, and that's one of the two teams that the Magic have to be concerned with...especially now.

Washington traded a problem-child for the corpse of Rashard Lewis, I think that was a great deal for both teams, as Orlando is crying out for someone who wants the ball and wants to shoot and Washington can't reasonably expect that spending time with Agent Zero wouldn't be difficult for Wall. I'm also pumped that Arenas gets another go at it, I liked him a lot til the 'threatening other people with guns' thing.

As a Celtics fan, the East just got a lot better - better to watch, too. I can't decide if having better basketball is worth the road to 18 being that much harder...I think it probably is.

IMO, this trade benefits Orlando more than it does the Suns. Arenas is a much better player than Reggie Lewis (can't believe he's the second highest player in the league). Richardson and Turgolu are better today than Pietrus and Carter. The Suns need for a big man what what brought about this deal (Gortat? Who knew?)
01:05 PM on 12/19/2010
I'm sorry but Turkoglu isn't better than anyone right now, and I'm sure Phoenix would have traded him for anything. If ever a player has completely mailed it in after getting a contract its Turkoglu, Orlando is hoping to recapture his great year from a couple seasons ago...one problem, that was a contract year for him, and he hasn't been the same since, ask the people in Toronto and now Phoenix. Carter can still be effective, when he wants...he'll go down as the biggest fairweather player in NBA history. This trade actually benefits Phoenix as well, they get a much needed big man in Gorcat, who should be a starter, and Carter and Pietrus should help them to maybe squeeze into the playoffs while Nash still has some life left.

I hope things work out well for Gilbert in Orlando. He left a rebuilding team to go to a contender. He should have quite a bit left in his tank. Taking his talents to the Magic is the best thing that could have happened to him. Best of luck, Gilbert. You are a class act.
