Prince William & Kate Middleton Make First Public Appearance Since Engagement Announcement (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 12/18/10 05:08 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Prince William and Kate Middleton made their first public appearance since the announcement of their engagement on Saturday night, stepping out to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular in aid of the Teenager Cancer Trust in Fakenham, England.

The BBC reports that all money raised from the event will "go towards the £2.5m [$3.9 million] cost of building the first specialist cancer unit for young people at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge." The couple was invited to the event by Prince William's friend Emilie Van Cutsem.

For the occasion, Kate wore a black and white frock with an embellished and cutout neckline by Temperley, paired with a black jacket, black pumps and a black clutch. And of course, her engagement ring.

Check out images of the couple's arrival and scroll down for a big picture of Kate's dress. And catch up on the latest royal wedding details here.

I can't imagine two less relevant people who'll be crammed down our throats every day, ad nauseum, until they walk the aisle. It's offensive, all the attention. I keep seeing the photos of Charles and Camilla being pelted by angry mobs over what really matters in the UK: economic disaster. This isn't a distraction, it's an affront.

Beautiful couple who will inherit way too much stuff...I really think they should request donations to a charity (or simply to help the poor in their own country) instead of zillion dollar wedding presents...a few personal ones from close friends and family but really the rest could go to help people who need it. They will be well taken care of...enough said and it would show them to be very aware young people if they choose to do so.

No articles of the Obamas being snubbed by not being invited to the wedding?

I thought Diana did a lot of good to the royals...tearing it all down and "celebritizing" them with a modern bent...I must say, all of this seems like a scoop of yesteryear...dull...

She seems intent on showing off the ring. Not that you could miss it ....

I thought the same thing. Either she's very protective of her purse or some stylist hot glued her hands in that position.

How disatriously insensitive to have such an expensive wedding in the time of recession.

I think it's just what the country needs for a pick-me-up. And the wedding will bring billions of dollars in tourism over the next few years, paying for itself a thousand times over.

WiIlliam and Kate won't get the title "of Wales" until Charles ascends to the throne; currently the "of Wales" title is held by Charles, who is first in line to the throne.

Sorry, I'm wrong ... you are right, William is already Prince of Wales. But ... she won't technically be Princess Catherine, she will be Princess William. See here:

I look at William and I still see that thin young man with his brother who just lost their beloved mother and my heart just wants him to be happy. To lose a mother at that age is extremely difficult. Charles did a good job with them though. I think Kate and William will be very happy and I look forward to watching the wedding.

Wills needs to get a more modern fit for his suits

Look pretty good (and expensive) to me.

What changes do you think should be made to it?
03:50 PM on 12/20/2010
His suit might be extremely expensive...but a more fitted pant, jacket and shirt have been around for a few years now. They are not as baggy. His pants are too baggy and jacket is too big...by modern standards. I don't mean tight, just more fitted to the body. Pick up any GQ and look through it.
11:01 PM on 12/19/2010
Couldnt agree more...like something with an athletic fit...what is with the old man pleated pants? Is it a hand me down from Charles...tired and old looking, from 1950.

Don't understand people calling William ugly compared to Kate. He looks like his mother, that's about as perfect as you can get.

Don't worry. The chances of you marrying into the Royal Family are pretty slim. Rest easy.

I hope not. Kate has had eight years to watch this family. She must know what she is getting into. Plus, I think that William is going to be different in the sense that he won't put everything before his bride. He saw and knows what his mom went through.

Kate hasn't had any experience dealing with the Buckingham officials. It's been written before that she didn't meet the Queen until Peter and Autumn Phillips' wedding in 2008.

She may be a long-time girlfriend and now fiancée, but I doubt that before the engagement, she has been exposed to palace/royal life which is extremely rooted in protocol and control is not in the monarchs' hands, but the advisers.

She still has that bright smile of a newly engaged woman. But saying she knows what she is getting into? We shall see in about a year or two. There's a lot of machinations done by palace officials that are unseen by the public, and are experienced by royals.

It will not be easy for Kate, just as it wasn't/isn't easy for any of the 'commoners' who became Princesses and future Queens in Europe in just the last 10 years. William has to support and protect her every step of the way, and from what I've been reading about William wanting his own way about the wedding, I think he has a mind of his own. We don't want another "Crown Princess Masako of Japan", who was bullied into a nervous breakdown by palace officials for not providing the needed male heir, and being a woman who had an independent image.
