Dr. Dean Ornish Talks Cancer Prevention On CNN's 'Larry King Live'

First Posted: 12/19/10 12:05 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Dr. Dean Ornish appeared on Larry King's CNN show on Saturday to discuss advances in cancer research.

Cancer "often is preventable," Dr. Ornish said. It's not just new drugs or medical treatments that can make a difference, but also "the simple choices that we make in our lives each day" -- what we eat, how much we exercise, whether we smoke, and how much love we get.

At the beginning of each year, millions of individuals aspire to keep the same resolution: to live a healthier life. When it comes to fulfilling this goal, most people promise to keep a well balanced diet and to exercise regularly, but the path to great health is easier said than done. With busy schedules, procrastination, and uninformed practices, it is no wonder that by the end of January, most resolutions will end in failure. However, there is no more room for failure. Seven out of every ten Americans will die from a chronic disease and for the first time in history, our children may have a shorter lifespan than their parents. It is time to become informed and proactive about our own health and future, and now it is easier than ever to do just that by joining Self chec, a free online service that educates, supports, and reminds you to care about yourself through monthly e-health reminders and easy to understand health tools. Hallo everybody. My name is Polly. I am working for The First Rehabilitation Center for people who are affected by the diagnosis Breast cancer in Bulgaria. On Sunday, 19th december, I was watching Larry King's Show. The topic was New Improvements in all tipes of cancer, expecially breast cancer. One of the guests in the show was an Indian researcher whose book is already bestsellar. I would like to know the name of the book and how can I buy it?
Thank you in advance.

A book titled "The China Study" corroborates Ornish on many points--diet--mostly plant-based, exercise, moderation. Many diseases that plague, and are bankrupting, our society, are preventable.

roselaw, it's a great book! There's also a documentary coming out on the book called Knives over Forks or Forks over Knives. It will be out in early spring. I'm anxious to see it.

I brought the book the day it came into our bookstore, I was putting books away and it caught my eye and went home with me that night. I'd already gone onto the plant based diet since reading Eat to Live by Fuhrman, though I'd been a vegetarian and then vegan since 1970. There are those who still pooh pooh these findings but there's truth in the massive China study which is still going on almost 30 years later.

#41 for bring up this book.

The China study is a methodological joke.

Yes, most deceases that plague us are totally preventable, but a plant-based diet is not the answer.

glad to know that "Cancer often is preventable" by some simple ways. according to the reports on the largest and most trusted STD health support and safe dating community Positivemate,,com Over 70 million people are living with STDs in the U.S. alone, as well as an estimated 400 million people worldwide. and the number is increasing.. maybe the prevention is much important than curing.

at the beginning, that statement by a typical hopelessness doctor is very ominous ; insteadof just making money from life threatening [chemo etc ] drug companies can make money form chronic what an improvement; chronic is where the money is for drug companies which have no incentive to cure anything just keep people alive to feed their cash cow

pardon my positivity. Dr Ornish will be highly honored in due time; he obviously has to respect the boundary of his MD liscence and only speak prevention .

as a nobody i can advocate alternaitve medicine as a cure ; much money $ billions needs to be given to research about alternative

enough testimonials exists to warrant research e.g. a TCM doctor reversed a tumor in a kidney which the persons MD had said was too advanced to treat so the kidney needed to be removed but the patient [ in Vitality magazine ] sought a second opinion and the traditional chinese medicine expert saved the kidney with 6 months of strong herbal tea etc regimin

i've heard of testimonials from Maharishi Ayur veda clinic /spas also

if huffpost has enough staff ask some MDs who are trained in Maharishi ayur veda etc about this

I first heard Dean Ornish speak at UCSD in 1986. The human diet is a spectrum of choices. The cummulative effect of the choices manifests as part of the nurture/nature paradigm. Genetics is not always destiny.

You can manipulate your inner environment by your diet. Some diets are pro-cancer, pro-inflammation, pro-arthritis. pro-heart disease, pro-aging, etc.

I eat wild salmon and raspberries. The omega-3 balance is essential as is the intake of ellagic acid from the seeds of the Meeker Raspberry. Other berries also contain ellagic acid that repairs DNA so that cancerous cells are destroyed by the bodies own defenses.

The Omega balance turns down inflammation that promotes disease.

Ornish should have been awarded a NOBEL prize for overturning the myth that heart disease is irreversible........

Indeed he should be a recipient of the great prize. He started the the ball rolling so to speak that has now become even bigger and better. He's a hero of mine though I don't have heart problems but that I've been able to prevent them.

fanned and faved.
