Ark Encounter Creationist Theme Park Gets Preliminary Approval For Kentucky State Funds

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/21/2010 9:22 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:20 pm

Ark Encounter, a creationist theme park slated for construction in Northern Kentucky, may soon be eligible for state tax incentives that would allow its planners to recoup up to $37 million of building costs. The attraction has already received preliminary approval from the state tourism board.

After receiving support from Democratic Governor Steve Beshear early this month, Kentucky's Tourism Development Finance Authority laid down some conditions under which Ark Encounter's financial backers could receive compensation for up to 25 percent of their $150 million investment in the religious theme park.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that a new feasibility study will be conducted by the state, following news that the park's backers had never provided a copy of their own findings to Kentucky officials:

The Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet will employ a third-party consultant to do an independent analysis of financial projections for the park.

If the consultant finds the project won't generate enough economic activity, the board could decide not to grant the full 25 percent return on the $150 million investment over 10 years. It also could decide not to grant any incentives.

The amusement park, which will include a three-stories high, two-football-fields long replica of Noah's Ark on part of its 800-acre ground, follows up on the Creation Museum, another Kentucky attraction also created by religious group Answers in Genesis that has now attracted more than a million visitors.

A recent study found 40 percent of Americans still believe in creationism, a statistic that suggests a large pool of potential customers for the religious theme park.

Don't invest in THAT!

There are plenty of christian theme parks...what we need is a Pastafarian theme park.

This governor Steve Beshear is quite ridiculous, rendering his support to this ridiculous myth.

Vote him out next time.

Also if this controversial park continues as planned, Kentucky will become a shame of the entire country. It will also become a place of constant disputes, legal and non-legal. Instead of a tourist center, Kentucky becomes a dispute center, paying heavy and long-term expenses in court disputes. Do citizens of Kentucky really want this to happen?

150 million dollars to support this? What if that money were used for, say, job creation?

Jewish, Christian and Muslim religions all appear based on primitive ideologies, manufacturing an idea of an external God who is involved and has 'favorites,' in human affairs. It seems the various forms of this craziness due their best to outbid each other: Each needs to be Number One. -- Hopefully these delusions will come to an end someday and humanity will at least be free of this one brainwashing and burden and thus better enabled and empowered to live in a better world.

I hope at some point they attempt to fill that ark with two of every species on earth. Y'know, just to prove to us skeptics that it's possible.

It would be no problem at all. All (except for a few birds) of the animals would be transported outside of time and space, and their machine parts in "sleep mode" , so no mess anywhere/when.

Another HuffnPuff Post non-story. The "feasibility study ....conducted by the state, " is already one of Kentucky Tourism Development Act's requirements. It's not something that is being done because of all the Lexington Herald-Leaders agitation over this issue.

I expect my comments will once again be censored by the HuffPuff masters?

Why would words be censored? Freedom of speech is never an issue, I would think.

Though annoyed at the prospect of a park that will inculcate unscientific rhetoric into the minds o the masses who choose to partake in the activities, at least jobs will be created to build, run and maintain the park.

Yes, we should leave the 21st century high-tech jobs to the Koreans and Chinese.
I suppose that we'll all have promising career opportunities in the feudal serf industry of the US oligarchy in the near future.

Yeah, I don't know. It's one of those tough philosophical battles where the arguments for both sides are pretty strong.

There isn't a single thing in the Babble that couldn't have been written by mere mortal men who lived over 2000 years ago - not one single thing, The stories of Genesis are ridiculous to the extreme and to see grown adults believing them to be historical instead of hysterical is disturbing.

Hello. I just read your comment, "I fell asleep after the 100th "begat" ". Was that just a line or were you serious?

I agree that the begats is some of the most boring prose about sex in the history of fiction, but if you wade through that part there are some amazing war epics involving genocide, rape, pillage and other goodies that are absolutely captivating.

What about the prophecies that came true: Virgin shall have a child (xmas story).

What about Jesus predicting he would come back to life?

Sure anyone could write the Bible if it were not true: how is that a major intellectual break through?

I'm fascinated by your sheer credulity. Let me understand your logic. One part of a fictitious book says something is going to happen, then the other part says it did happen. That makes it real how exactly?

I was impressed in "Terminator" how the Schwarzenegger character also claimed "I'll be back" and sure enough there he was in "Terminator 2" and later sequels. So I suppose that story must be true also. Cool!

REALITY?

You are kidding, right? Pu-leeze tell me you're kidding! Fairy tales promoted as science/truth...?

Oh lawd.

I was wondering about that question, too. I suppose a Constitutional challenge will be forthcoming if the park funding is a go.
