Rihanna, Christina Aguilera Performances Prompt 'X Factor' Ofcom Investigation

First Posted: 12/21/10 11:41 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

British regulators have launched an investigation into this month's "X Factor" finale following claims that performances by Christina Aguilera and Rihanna were too sexy for family TV.

The "X Factor" finale aired from 7-9 PM on Saturday, December 11. Under British rules, 9PM is the "watershed hour," after which adult content can be shown.

During the finale, a scantily-clad Aguilera performed "Express" from her recent film, "Burlesque," while Rihanna stripped during a performance of her hit, "What's My Name?"

Ofcom has reportedly received almost 2,750 complaints about the performances, with an additional 1,500 complaints registered with broadcaster ITV. The show could be fined, and ITV could be forced to apologize, if Ofcom finds that the show violated code.

An estimated 14 million viewers watched the X Factor finale.

You wanna talk too hot? Watch Christina's video 'Dirrty'. Coming to think of it, I like that video.

I didn't mind it with the volume off. I could understand not wanting your kids to watch this, somewhat odd though that it would be totally okay 10 mins later. (as they said it ended the last show after which adult content can be shown)

for gals ages 18-30 the clothing style now is STRIPPER, plain and simple, our culture is scraping the bottom of the barrel

Didn't Pink start this trend of disrobing during her performance of "Glitter in the Air", or something like that? Now all the ladies either want to take off their clothes or hang over the audience. **Yawn**. Seen it before. I think Miss Aguilera would be wise to avoid this type of performance until her divorce is final. She's looking bloated and just plain tired.

I know Christina isn't 20 years-old anymore, but she is looking kind of rough. The 7 layers of make-up doesn't help either...it makes her look much older than she is.

Let me see girating in thong briefs and bras with garter belts and being suggestively un-robed by a man is perfectly okay for our kids to watch on national prime time TV? Sounds like us Americans are pretty de-sensitized to our hyper sexualized media and pop culture. I'm not ultra-conservative but I don't want my kids watching these images that seem normal and "tame" to others. Maybe I should move to Britain.

If Rihanna had a better costume change and slightly more clothing on, her mixing of genres was interesting. But, Christina: how many times must we see that Madonna (minus the cone shaped cups) inspired scene? The remake of Lady Marmalade (you participated in) was over 5 years ago, Chicago was another 4 years ago, try some originality! Sex doesn't always sell!

Adults are always trying to protect kids from seeing things they deem "dirty", while kids of course watch it oblivious to the dirt the adult's brain heaps on it...

You know, I'd like to know what the f about human sexuality is more offensive and damaging than violence?

...XFactor didn't have performers pretending to shoot people. What's your point?

Turn the channel and look around. Guns and corpses everywhere. I'm not focusing on Xfactor alone, since it really isn't the whole of the world's television programming.

Great point but violence was not the subject matter her, sexual content was and to be honest, those performances were to sexy for children. I wouldn't want my 7 year old watching that.

Is Ofcom certain the complaints weren't about Rihanna's vocals and not the sexy level?
