For the second straight week, an Oklahoma City Thunder fan nailed a shot from half court to win $20,000 on Sunday, courtesy of MidFirst Bank. Todd Lafferty, a third grade teacher, said before the shot attempt that all he wanted to do was hit the rim and backboard. Todd Dobson, MidFirst Bank CFO, said after the shot that he thought a fan would make it once every two or three years. Scroll down to watch the video.

You have to love the interviewed CFO doing his best to disguise his rage at having to pay out $20k 2 weeks in a row.

I can imagine the negotiations for his bank's sponsorship went something along the lines of, "it's great marketing and these fans are so bad that you probably won't have any winners for a few years. We can't lose!"

Awesome shot. I'm happy it was a teacher and not, say, a hedge-fund banker.

Be careful, Mr. Lafferty. Congress will come knocking for a piece of that money that you didn't really earn.

Congress: "Let's start a new half-court shot tax. It's just luck that they got it so they didn't earn it anyways. We'll put it at 25% and it can fund puppies for terminal cancer patients. What sort of mean person wouldn't be all for that?"

By your logic, we shouldn't have to pay taxes on:
Inherited Estates - we didn't "earn" that
Stocks/ETFs - we didn't "earn" that money, we just sat back and watched the stock price

But that aside, can't you just be impressed by what he just did. He shot a half-court shot, in front of a crowd of fans. That's pressure... and the fact he's a teacher makes it all the more special. We should be paying them far more than the athletes that he goes to see perform.

"We should be paying them far more than the athletes that he goes to see perform. "

There's not enough money to pay every school teacher six and/or seven figure salaries. The money simply isn't there. But, yeah, pro athletes are way, way overpaid.
