Women Face Better Employment Prospects Than Men, Will Drive Recovery, Report Says

The economic recovery will be led by women, who are, on the whole, better educated than men and more likely to find employment in today's anemic job market, according to a new report.

Women, whose employment relative to men's is at a historic high, will increasingly drive consumer spending, according to a new Bank of America Merrill Lynch report. As the economic landscape shifts, and employers demand more highly educated workers, women will find themselves in stronger financial shape than men, equipped with the buying power to spur and sustain economic growth, the report predicts.

The Great Recession put a higher proportion of men out of work than women, and, if the report's authors are to be believed, it laid the foundation for a new gender dynamic in the American workforce. The construction and manufacturing industries, which account for about half of the nation's job losses, are dominated by men. Last month, the male unemployment rate was 10.6 percent, compared to 8.9 percent for women.

The jobs that do exist in large numbers are concentrated in industries dominated by women, including nursing and retail, the report says. If men want work, they'll have to be willing to explore new careers.

"It will require a generational shift and a shift in attutides about what is a traditional male versus female job," said Ethan Harris, the Bank of America Merrill Lynch economist who co-authored the report with economist Neil Dutta. "For men to catch up, they will have to accept that a healthcare job is a good job."

As a crowded job market has pushed employers to put a premium on higher education, women, who are statistically more likely to graduate from college, have an upper hand. "The economy is going to reward people with more education," Harris said. "There's a retooling of the male workforce that needs to take place."

Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity. As women have more secure income, the report says, they will increasingly spend the dollars that could drive an economic recovery.

But other economists are skeptical. In the highest paying jobs, for example, men continue to dominate. Female income, as the report acknowledges, is still about two-thirds that of men.

Job growth tends to be in low-paying sectors, said Mark Blyth, a political economy professor at Brown. Even if more women are employed than men, it doesn't necessarily follow that they'll drive an economic recovery.

"It may be the case that women have a slight advantage over men in terms of college qualifications, but that doesn't mean everybody's going to be working for JPMorgan," Blyth said. "If there's going to be more women employed in health care -- and historically they get paid less than men -- don't hold your breath for heart-pumping consumer spending."

The labor market, further, might not undergo as fundamental a shift as the report predicts. Construction and manufacturing jobs are cyclical, meaning they're tied to economic booms and busts. As the economy recovers, the status quo might well be restored.

Since the economy started adding jobs in December 2009, women have gained 45,000 jobs. Men, meanwhile, have gained 906,000.

"Men saw disproportionate job loss, so it makes sense they would have disporportionate gain," said Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. "The jobs that come back tend to look like the ones that were lost."

As the male unemployment rate has dropped 0.6 percentage points since November 2009, the female unemployment rate has increased 0.3 percentage points.

The income gap, Shierholz added, is "still pretty intense."

Opening up most all employment fields to women, though very right, has always led to problems in employment for males. For example, research what happened here after the close of WWII, where women had assumed many of our domestic manufacturing jobs. The government had to actively encourage women to step aside and allow the returning males to go back to their jobs. When you 'double' the pool of potential applicants, employment trends and wage rates will shift. To me it's entirely unclear what role sexism is playing in the wage differences between men and women. My profession, architecture, traditionally had 'no' women in the field until the late 1980's. Now, most architecture schools retain about 50% women class size at matriculation. I can say the trend the past 30 years has been towards lower pay for everyone in the field, though that is also due in part to other things going on.

We're supposed to believe the Bank of America? We're supposed to believe Merrill? Sorry, but I need more info on the report.

This is an outrageous attempt to pit men against women in a horrible jobs marketplace. Huffpo should be ashamed.

One man in five is unemployed in California, but the figure is almost as high for women. This is because companies here have cut their better-paid and more senior employees and not targeted their less-productive employees. As a consequence, California companies are generally managed worse and are less productive than they were two and three years ago.

In other words, the problem is just about backwards from what this "report" would have you believe.

Very interesting article. I will be interested to see whether the predictions in this report come true. As you say in this piece, thus far men have benefited from 95% of the job gains in the recovery. I wrote about it here: http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Issues/The-Economy/2010/12/23/Rough-Unemployment-Road-for-Men-Could-Be-Ending.aspx (and linked back)

Women's success differs with ethnicity, age, economics and education. But however you look at it, the number of women in the most powerful positions is modest & stagnant. Even if they earn the big bucks, their power seldom matches the money.

The "income-gap" is caused by different fields of employment, difference in total work-hours and different life-goals, not sexism.

Perhaps Mother nature has said "times up ,guys". Every modern trend does not portend well for the future of men. Nor does biology. Younger men are increasingly becoming little more than decorative objects that are supported by women. Wonder what will happen when women figure out that they don't need so many "drone bees" around to feed and clothe.
02:09 PM on 12/22/2010
Well that means they (women) will have not learned any lessons regarding equality in society.

There is no misandrist message here. Most women love men, even the women who aren't sexuality attracted to them. I look forward to the day when people's abilities are evaluated less on their gender than their ability. There are many women who can be the better boss, there are many men who can be the better parent. Just as examples.

This reminded me of research done by the Armed Forces during the 80-90s. They wanted to scientifically prove that women could not stand the rigors of a Combat Pilot. After all the research they proved that women are actually better than men. They can take greater G-Forces, they are better at multitasking, and they make better combat decisions(shot or not, friendly of foe).
This is just another mess they will have to clean up.

Research has shown that a balanced household, one in which at least two adults are bringing in money (not necessarily equal pay), is ideal. Unfortunately, in this country, it always seems we move from one extreme to the other.
03:06 PM on 12/22/2010
Not doubting your sources but what are they? Everything I have heard states that a household, at least those with children in it, is better off with 1 stay at home parent. If you are talking about a household with no children, then I agree.

I can believe it. I opened a hair salon in an area in Georgia that I thought would be recession proof. It is completely surrounded by hospitals and surgical clinics. Most of our clients come from the businesses and hospitals in the area and I haven't been effected in the least by the recession. My husband's business on the other hand has been pretty much flat over the past three years. I just guess it all depends on what you get into, for me the salon business has been wonderful!!

I find this completely plausible, as it is now Women do most of the cleaning chores. They should be able to clean up this mess. As an added bonus maybe they can get more power to control the direction of government. Face it guys, they can hardly be any worse than we have been.

Yes, people will survive. Some will pull up stakes and move. A carpenter is going to look for carpentry work. Good luck thinking he'll magically start going to a cubicle for much less pay.

High-powered women typically become high-powered women because they're not going to be attracting a man and his paycheck with their looks or charm.

PSA: For those who have ugly daughters, remember to encourage them to read and study.
___________________________________________________________________________

What an ugly thing to say.

Good parents teach both their sons and daughter to be well rounded by: studying, thinking, exercising, helping, being silly at the right times, taking pride in their appearance without being superficial, and being kind and accepting to those who are different.
