To your average sleeper, a series of 6 a.m. concerts might sound like something of a non-starter. But for the chance to see Chicago world music masters Hamid Drake and Michael Zerang, it's well worth the early rise.
Drake and Zerang are performing the 20th annual Winter Solstice Concerts, a series of hour-long ritual performances that celebrate the longest nights and shortest days of the year. Their concerts will deploy a mesmerizing variety of percussion instruments from North Africa, the Middle East, India, and the West.
Drake and Zerang are veterans of the local world music and new music scenes, and have performed nationally and internationally together. They are renowned for their intricate percussion improvisations, and the opportunity to see the two of them play is a rare treat, even if it means waking up while it's still dark out.
