I may be cynical but I suspect Pat and his fellow Bible Thumpers have an ulterior motive here - that being to have their own groups be the place to send these people who are caught using marijuana instead of prison.

Which, don't get me wrong - I think sending people to prison for 10 years when caught with marijuana is a very stupid thing and has done nothing to stop drug usage in this  Read More...

Hateful entertainers like Robertson and Pope Benny have to cave in a little once in a while to create better PR for themselves. Benny was told by God that condoms were better than AIDS in some cases; that was his concession. Robertson made a splash in the media by advocating
legalization of weed. (This from a guy who said thousands died in NYC because of homosexuality among other things.) These are interesting times to live in. Lots of colorful characters like Robertson floating in the jetsam. I don't think he deserves credit for anything.

There are so many reasons why this may be the most forward thinking, actually Christian, comment he has ever made. Hate-based Christianity is unfortunately a grim challenge the United States faces. Some refer to it as the American Taliban. Regardless of the label, it will take many more, like Rev. Robertson, placing Christlike qualities first and discriminatory othering techniques second, to change the tide. It is a long road. The purveyors of hate-based Christianity have corrupted the religion for financial and political profit, and they are entrenched.

brings to mind a skit from a long time ago (which, in itself disproves an old wives tale about pot and memory) -- I use to be messed on drugs, now I've found the lord, now I'm all messed up on the lord.-Cheech and Chong

Pat Robertson has been a con artist and war profiteer for over 40 years.
He doesn't really support legalization. He supports taxpayer funding for "faith-based" drug treatment dormitories. It's a scam.

I remember being home from school, sick, back in the early '70's, and I was watching 700 Club, (I was struggling with faith then.) Robertson had a local celebrity from WBAP (Dallas/FW) and they were talking about the planes being shot down over North Vietnam, and Robertson was advising everyone to invest in titanium and other strategic metals because he knew we would be spending billions on warplanes decades into the future.
That's when I gave up on organized Christianity once and for all. I haven't forgotten it, and I've kept one eye on Robertson and the other televangelists since.

Just to back up your claim that it's a scam...

"Dr. Robertson did not call for the decriminalization of marijuana. He was advocating that our government revisit the severity of the existing laws because mandatory drug sentences do harm to many young people who go to prison and come out as hardened criminals. He was also pointing out that these mandatory sentences needlessly cost our government millions of dollars when there are better approaches available. Dr. Robertson's comments followed a CBN News story about a group of conservatives who have proven that faith-based rehabilitation for criminals has resulted in lower repeat offenders and saved the government millions of dollars. Dr. Robertson unequivocally stated that he is against the use of illegal drugs.

"Dr. Robertson" my a**. This fool said that American cities suffered tragedies because gay people lived there and were accepted by many. He's no "doctor," despite what worthless degrees he may have. Heck, there are people who get themselves ordained as
"ministers" for a few dollars by mail or Internet so they can earn some bucks by performing weddings. Very impressive--"Dr. Robertson."

Would the janitor please check the church for a "pod." It is possible that the Most Reverend Pat Robertson has been the victim of a body snatcher or had his brain sucked out by an alien. After decades of lunacy ole Pat has finally hit on something that makes sense. If he came up with this on his own and it is not some evangelical bait and switch deal then bravo Pat, and keep talking. Perhaps the best way to destroy the market price for pot is to apply good old supply and demand. When hundreds of thousands of licensed pot farmers are growing weed the supply will force a drop in price. Couple that with laws against purchasing or selling unlicensed product and we may stand a chance of reducing the prison population by thousands and starving out the Mexican drug cartels even if they drop their price. With good legislation even buying licensed and taxed product will be wiser than illegal pot even if it costs a bit more.

Legalize it. But unless you have a prescription for an obvious affliction.... I would never hire a pothead legal or not.

The best thing this country could do is legalize marijuana for adults. Allow people to buy a tax stamp to grow their own. Put a small part of that enormous amount of money that would be saved towards education of minors about mental health and the dangers of excessive pot use, and all the other drugs. Toward treatment of addiction.
Put the weight of enforcement behind protecting minors.

Right now, the current laws help to draw minors into the street sales of drugs. Then they're slowly assimilated into the prison recidivist population and turned into hardened criminals. There's also the corrupting influence this has in Mexico.
While I favor legalization, my decades of experience with pot, alcohol and with abusers of all drugs tells me that we cannot afford to continue down this path. The debate should be centered around mental health and helping kids get a good education and a good start in life. Then there will be fewer addicts who need treatment, and law enforcement will be a much easier job.

Pleas read the whole story. CBN walked back his comments. Actually what he's promoting is "faith-based dormitory drug treatment centers" as an alternative to prison.
It's another hustle of taxpayer money to enlarge the army of evangelical koolaid drinkers.
No thanks.

I wish HP would've included his rationale for legalization. It could have been an attack of aphasia, except in Robertson's case aphasia would produce sense as opposed to his normal nonsense.

Interesting how he treats the institutionalization of marijuana criminalization as part of something removed from the agenda of the religious right - like it's something he just discovered after "looking into it."

The "War on Drugs" was the Reagan Administrations pander to the Christian Coalition - the Just Say No campaign all the way to mandatory sentencing. This was their rape baby, so it's amusing when he pretends to look at the fruit of his loins like he "ain't that baby daddy."

Puh-lease. Wake up and take some friggin' responsibility, Preacher Pat.
