The Worst College Role Models Of 2010

First Posted: 12/22/10 02:15 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

College campuses can be notorious bastions of bad behavior, and this year, we learned that students are hardly responsible for all the appalling things that occur on them. See below the 11 offenders who, by hook and by crook, behaved badly enough in an educational setting to earn them a place on this list.

But hey, not all is lost! If you're looking for some inspiration, see our top college role models of 2010.

Did we leave out a less-than-shining exemplar of collegiate maturity and reason? Add your anti-role model in the comments section.

Karen Owen
1 of 12
When former Duke student Karen Owen's “horizontal academics” PowerPoint presentation went viral in October, she told Jezebel that it was intended for select eyes only. But it only took a few days before the raunchy document took the internet by storm, making Owen the focus of a heated debate -– was she breaking the glass ceiling by having sex "like a guy?"

While some ardently believe this to be the case, others say that equating feminism with irresponsible and hurtful sexual promiscuity is offensive –- they believe Owen’s actions were more a pursuit of the lowest common denominator between the sexes than an attempt at equality.

Glenn Beck and the Yearning for Fascism
by Matthew Rothschild, The Progressive

"...As if the rally wasn’t enough, Beck continued on his crusade during the week. Check this comment out: Beck said, “There are a lot of universities that are as dangerous with the indoctrination of the children as terrorists are in Iran or North Korea.”

The irony is that Ahmadinejad has actually denounced the universities in Iran with similar disdain. One year into his first term, he asked scornfully “why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities." He and Beck see eye to eye on that one..."

Glenn Beck shouldn't be on that list, that is just silly.

Because he is a good role model or because he's too silly to be considered for anything? Just curious.

How about professor John Yoo at UC Berkeley?
He's a fine role model for our young law students.

Although Beck would not make a good role model for a student of ethics and truth, he does make a great role model for would-be actors, rodeo clowns and propogandists!

I didn't know that Four Loko was being blamed for gay bashing now. Really, come on, people. That came from somewhere much deeper than an aluminum can.

Eh, that's the equivalent of charging duct tape as an accessory to kidnapping.

You can find offense in anything if you dig deep enough.

You will never guess what fraternity George W. Bush belong to at Yale. The answer is Delta Kappa Epsilon or simply DKE to the brothers.
When I was in college (eons ago), DKE already had a reputation so I'm not surprised they have carried on their infamous tone-deaf personality.

Shouldn't a "University's" website be located on an EDU domain instead of in gleenbeck.como/folder?

I agree with the last statement. This wasn't about breaking a glass ceiling. This was about one woman naming and shaming for her own pleasure. There's power in doing that. And it's wrong. It would be as wrong if a man did it.

I have serious issue with people making what she did out to be this feminist talking point. This is about as far away from empowering women as you can get.
