Adrian Sobaru, Romanian Electrician, Jumps From Parliament Balcony In No-Confidence Vote Protest (VIDEO)

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Romania's government survived a no-confidence motion in Parliament on Thursday in a session overshadowed by a man who flung himself from the chamber's balcony, apparently in protest over the government austerity measures. His injuries were not life-threatening. (Scroll down for photos and video.)

A loud thud reverberated in the chamber after the man, Adrian Sobaru -- identified by the country's public television station as one of its engineers -- jumped from a height of about 7 meters (23 feet). He hit the benches shortly after Prime Minister Emil Boc greeted the lawmakers. No one else was injured.

Boc looked startled and rushed over to Sobaru, along with other lawmakers, before Speaker Mircea Geoana briefly postponed the session.

Boc called the incident "a tragedy that shocked me," and appealed for calm "in these tough times."

The session resumed without the presence of opposition lawmakers, who walked out when their request to reschedule the motion was not approved. The opposition needed 236 votes to topple the government, which survived because no vote for the motion was cast. (Article continues below.)

Romania's government is mired in recession and it recently slashed public sector wages by one-fourth. Sales tax was hiked from 19 to 24 percent, measures adopted by the government to keep the budget deficit at 6.8 percent in 2010. Its economy is expected to decline by 2 percent this year, after it contracted by 7.1 percent in 2009. The cuts have angered many Romanians.

Photos show Sobaru standing on a balcony above where lawmakers were sitting, before he jumped. More than half a dozen lawmakers watched him fall. The images show Sobaru wearing a white T-shirt, with the words "You've pierced us. You've killed our children's future. Freedom," in a reference to government policy.

The first line was a reference to President Traian Basescu, who upon winning the presidential race in 2009 said "I've pierced them," using a well-known line from a Romanian movie.

As emergency medical workers took him out on a stretcher, Sobaru shouted "Freedom!" -- echoing cries of the 1989 fall of communism in which more than 1,300 people died. Romanians are commemorating the 21st anniversary of the uprising in which authorities shot unarmed protesters.

Sobaru sustained face wounds, and other non life-threatening injuries, said Catalin Carstoiu, manager at the University Hospital. He will undergo surgery and psychological counseling, Carstoiu said.

I saw the video: there's no way he could be dumb enough to think he could commit suicide from that height. No way. Maybe he was looking to break his face and get some pain pills but suicide? Don't think so...

I wonder what psychology they will counsel. Appears to be at least as passionate as many extremists. This is becoming the norm. Get used to it.

I read that he has a daughter who needs medical treatment. I also read that the U.S. is making cuts to Medicare & Medicaid. Health should not be bought or sold. It is not a priviledge--it is a right. Support this man and support single payer health insurance.

I kind of agree with you, but at the same time nobody has the right to take someone's time, work, money, part of your life and blood for FREE.

When was the last time you worked for FREE?

"When was the last time you worked for free"-That's a really curious way to look at things. Like most people, I worked for free quite a lot, on top of the 48hours a week that I worked for a wage to support the family. In my world, people do not TAKE things for free, people GIVE and SHARE things without expecting any reward other than a thank-you.
When was the last time that you walked by on the other side of the street--silly question, I know,

The MASSIVE AUSTERITY CUTS many of us WARNED about before the bail outs.

WE SAID: NO BAIL OUTS NO BAIL OUTS NO BAIL OUTS

PUT BANKSTERS INTO RECEIVESHIP/BANKRUPTCY!!!!

Did anyone listen? No.

They are out shopping believing everything is fine and that TARP was paid back.

Well the only TARP and the 3.3 TRILLION in unlimited bail outs of 1.5 Quadrillion worthless derivatives and credit-default swaps could ever be paid back is by hyper-inflation at the Fed.

It's called QE1, QE2, now QE3 and QE4.

First the hyper-inflation is being combatted worldwide by MASSIVE AUSTERITY, such is in Romania, then once the euro goes ^^poof^^, the U.S. Big Failed Banks, that think they are safe with unlimited bail outs, will go ^^poof^^ as well.

Then it's a New Dak Age for generations to come, perhaps a 1000 years before the next Renassaince.

Meanwhile, planet earth stands to lose 3/4 of its population, far more then the 1/3rd fall in population Europe experienced during the last Dark Ages.

Enjoy the bail outs folks, ...according to Warren Buffet, "...it was absolutely neccessary".

If "Austerity" means 1% cuts .. I don't see the big deal.

These dark suit banker types should not have been bailed out. But this greed on display by Public Employees over a 1% cut is just disgusting.
