Apartment Therapy House Tours: Kara & Ken's Modern Condo in the Sky

First Posted: 12/23/10 11:37 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Name: Kara & Ken, with their two kitties Jack and Bean
Location: Long Beach, California
Size: 850 square feet
Years lived in: 2 -- own

Kara and Ken Pearson took a great leap of faith in this new condo when they decided to downsize from a three bedroom house. We first saw Kara and Ken's home in the Small Cool Contest. With an incredible view of Long Beach, this condo sits on the fifth floor of a classy multi-unit residence. Kara showed me before photos and it's quite impressive how much style and great love they threw into their remodel.

These downtown condos are way overpriced. There's no parking for guests and shopping for food and such is always a hassle.

The advantage could be that if you work a block away, you can walk.

The condo market is a disaster right now and it doesn't help that single family home values in the upper brackets are still tumbling. I predict they will be underwater before the end of 2011.

I think condos, period, are way overpriced. With condos, you get all the problems of being a renter as well as all the problems-and liabilities-of being a homeowner. You don't really own anything beyond your four walls. Unless there's a special view, most condos are really just a box with a granite countertop, etc.

Fanned Sandrita.....condos used to be an inexpensive way to have a place to live and to accrue some value and equity. No more...they cost as much as a house. Condos went the way of landed property. Sky high prices that are about to tank, just like landed property has. The condo bubble has burst. Greed has taken over condos....surprise!!

I like a dwelling where I can be reasonably certain that dozens or hundreds of neighbors won't be able to watch my every move, like my shlurping into the kitchen in my robe in the morning, or arguing on the phone with the cable company, or watching goofy movies on Lifetime, or crying over those movies and their sappy endings.

All the world's a stage when you live in a condo like that.

I would like it more if it were in Naples.
Then again Naples doesn't allow high rises.
Long Beach has come a long way.
It's a great city and my favorite airport..

I would NOT have a brown wall or a gray wall; too depressing; I am not an interior decorator; but I would choose pastel colors for the walls, instead.. it's a nice condo, otherwise. Beautiful view! Long Beach is a nice city; parts of it, that is...
