What Your Last Minute Christmas Gift Really Says (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 12/23/10 11:07 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Christmas Eve is less than 24 hours away, so if you haven't gotten all your gifts by now, you're probably Googling "last minute gifts" as you read this. Don't panic -- there's still time to get an acceptable gift for everyone on your list. But while you're shuffling around the mall in a frenzy today, don't forget to think about what you're really saying with what you buy. Take these 13 typical last-minute gifts for example. You may think you're fooling the recipient into thinking you shopped for weeks, but many last minute gifts reveal just how little you know or care about the person it's for. See what we mean below and vote for the funniest last-minute gift.

I received a snuggie this year at the office "white elephant" gift exchange. No, I will be honest. I stole it from someone at the white elephant gift exchange. I am in love with it. I am proud to say it. Oh so warm and cozy.

In what world are a Burberry scarf and a Kindle considered crappy last minute gifts? If you're cynical enough to find fault with gifts like these, you don't deserve it.

For some people....a gift card is the ONLY answer. I choose to buy the prepaid Visa cards that can be used ANYWHERE! Then they aren't limited to a particular store.

Also, this year, my nephew decided he just wanted money...no gifts (he is 16 and saving for a car). So, I got a small black cauldron....filled it with about $200 in gold Presidential coins....and told him I killed a leprchaun for his gift! He got his money...and he knew that my wife and I put some thought into it for him! And from what I understand, he has yet to cash in the coins for "real" money yet as he has been busy showing off the dead leprechaun booty to his friends.

Last year I was so broke I gave my family cards with 100 dollar donations to the human fund. George Costanza's favorite charity. Some of them actually thought it was legit. :D Merry Xmas.

That is a fantastic idea. I already celebrate festivus instead of christmas, so this would really take it to the next level.

In defense of most men, women are hard to shop for. Then, they blame us for shopping on the 24th...Duhhhh...we've been thinking all this time, and now you've totally stressed us out.

For the record, this is not why I got divorced.

A kindle as a last minute gift? I doubt that. And just so you know, I love my kindle. I take it everywhere.

Hey! Don't crap on the bottle of alcohol. Sometimes it is the greatest gift of the holiday.

That bottle will make the day bearable, in some cases. In others? Knife fights and mashed potatoes flying everywhere. You gotta love it when families collide.

Nothing says "Elitist" like the person who put this list together. Sorry! But some of us believe it is the thought that counts. And some of us live within our means.

I have to lie down most of the time because my back's crap and I specifically asked for a snuggie. It's inexpensive but it does the trick and no one has to feel bad about not spending a bunch of money on a present for me. It was exactly what I wanted. Yeah!!!!

Yeah...when he asked me if I liked the Pajamagram...I said it was the thought that counts and that was all that mattered...

I spent over $1800 to fix my car, so people are getting a little stiffed this year. I got my brothers a game called Bananagrams and stick on compasses that I got from Walgreens. I also baked three desserts: a creamy blueberry crumb pie, a sweet potato pie, and a traditional Italian Anisette cookie. I also made a jar of my famous marinated olives. All of that is going to my family's house for consumption.

I have decided not to have any expectations when it comes to Christmas - I just get disappointed. But it's being together that counts.

This makes me feel like a total loser. I'd love to find meaningful, unique and impressive gifts, but it's rare that I come across anything like that within my budget. Best gift I ever got was a $3 dvd with hours of news footage from WWII. My dad absolutely loved it and thought it was the best gift of all. So it's not always about price, but most of the time it seems to be. What are some good gifts that us shopping-challenged people on a budget can look into? Usually when I go Christmas shopping I end up buying things I want or need for myself, but never find good gifts for others. Also are gift cards appropriate? I just feel like if everyone's giving each other gift cards, why don't we just all save our money and buy what we want for ourselves instead of going through the extra step of exchanging dollar amounts that force you to shop at a specific place?

Id rather take cash than gift cards to be honest. Why devalue the money and make sure you can only use it in one place, its a crappy gift already, but now its forcing the person to go to whatever place you picked to buy something for however much or little money you decided they were worth.

I might have to admit, i hate gift cards with a passion.

For Dad's birthday, I got him a $50 gift card to Lowe's, but what he really, REALLY loved were the free samples I got of non-toxic wood stains I picked up at the Green Festival. I picked up about 6 or so of them, and he lovingly laid them out on his workbench, surveying his treasure, while the gift card was set off in the corner.

Gifts are symbols of your regard and understanding of what's important to the recipient. It was part dumb luck, part intuition with the wood stain samples.
