I love The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven. Hokey, sweet, funny and Cary Grant as an angel...very nice.

I'm a sap for the old holiday movies like Christmas in Connecticut - they were hokey but with terrific actors - this one has Barbara Stanwyck - and I'd watch her read the phone book if possible. She was amazing.

Holiday Inn is another schmaltzy one -

But, Shop Around the Corner is without a doubt my all time favorite. Incredible actors (James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan, Frank Morgan and on and one) - clever story and terrific writing, directing and action. I watch it once a year....

I don't personally like any of the newer ones. Not sure why but I get bored and find I don't care about the characters.

I refuse to watch any Christmas stuff before Christmas. I work in Advertising and we start doing Christmas stuff in july and august and it goes all the way to Christmas, so I get pretty sick of it. This year I didn't listen to any Christmas music or watch any movies until Christmas, then on Christmas I watched a few movies and listened to some holiday music and I actually enjoyed it. And now its over for another year. For me it works to confine it to one weekend, and thats it!

The highly overlooked "Mixed Nuts" is wonderful, as is "Bad Santa"!

I hate "It's a Wonderful Life." An awful awful movie. I cannot understand it's appeal.

I've got to say that "A Christmas Story" was written about me. It sure seems that way. I've always loved the writing of Jean Shephard. I also like "Scrooged" as I am a big fan of Michael O 'Donahue.

"It's a Wonderful Life" is, by far, my favorite movie ever. Not even just Christmas movie. Of ALL the movies. Favorite.

Donna Reed is just so darn pretty, and George Bailey is just such a good man... also, I love when he freaks out at the teacher on the phone ("What do you mean sending her home like that, half-naked? Do you realize she'll probably end up with pneumonia on account of you?") and also, when he hasn't been born and he visits his mother, then he stumbles away from her door, looks up the street, and then around, straight at the camera with these super crazy eyes... best shot in a movie ever.

I'm surprised "Elf" isn't higher up on the list too! Elf is fracking great!

I agree. I usually watch that one around Turkey Day.

Seriously! Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner should star in a remake of It's a Wonderful Life!

Some movies should never be remade. It's a Wonderful Life is one of those.

Sad to see that just one comment mentioned "The Shop Around The Corner. LOOKIT!--Jimmy Stewart made TWO Christmas classics. This one has the luminous Margaret Sullivan as his romantic foil. You will want to give cheesy music boxes--the perfect gift.
Seeing it now, it does have a very sad pre-WWII vibe --it's set in late 30's MittleEuropa.

Just finished "The Lion in Winter" and I'm always blown away by how powerful it is. O'Toole, Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins in his first big role and Timothy Dalton in his.

Elinor of Aquitaine (Hepburn) - married to King Henry (O'Toole) goes off on a rant about sleeping with Henry's father... describing his body and when he took her.

Henry is shreiking, groaning, stumbling out of the room like some wounded beast, out the door with Elinor following and yelling behind him until she collapses in the doorway. Wait a beat. Then two. Then she slowly utters:

"Oh well, every family has its ups and downs."
