Stores Open On Christmas Day 2010: Walmart, Target, Kmart Among The Closed, Walgreens To Open

Wondering what stores are open on Christmas Day 2010? Hardly any.

Even though more stores than usual stayed open this Thanksgiving, and plenty of stores kept later hours this Christmas Eve, stores will widely be closed as typical on Christmas Day.

It's one of the few days every year in which nearly all businesses are closed across the country. Of course, this year Christmas falls on a Saturday, only solidifying the day off for many.

Walmart, Target, Kmart, Old Navy and Toys R Us were open on Christmas Eve, but will all be closed Christmas Day this year.

However, if you need to make a quick run to the store, Walgreens locations across the country will be open, and many CVS locations will also be open.

Other stores could be open locally too; it's best to check your local listings or call individual stores near you to be sure.

I'm as free market a capitalist as there is, but once a year, just stick a fork in it. If it isn't absolutely life saving necessary------close it & go home! For travelers, you can often "pay at the pump" even if the station is closed.

You couldn't buy a pack of cigarettes for 100 miles from where I live.

Couldn't you buy 4 packs the day before? (I'm an Altria owning, dividend cashing stockholder here so I'm trying to be as helpful as possible).

Actually no, I couldn't. All of our local stores were closed on Christmas Eve too.

Who would want to be in a store on Christmas day anyway? CVS and Walgreens are pharmacies so they are always going to open people always need their medication. Otherwise why would a store be open? it wouldnt even be worth it to open up shop.

When I worked in a grocery store, Christmas day was hoppin'! Last minute food preparation... (Honey I forgot whipped cream!) It was amazing. I think stores were closed so they wouldn't have to pay overtime. (holiday pay)

Um, non-religious people, Jews, Muslims, Pagans, Buddhists, Hindus (did I forget anyone?), we live in a diverse country. I celebrate Winter Solstice so Xmas day is just another day to me, albeit a day when my husband and I had a hard time finding a decent restaurant that was open...

We went out to an awesome new Chinese buffet that just opened here in Phoenix.
I guess if you live in a small town you might be short of options, but generally ethnic restaurants such as Chinese, Indian, Thai and the like are open.

I worked in the medical field when I was young, and Christmas was just another work day.

The Jewish community here has volunteers that staff the 911 offices on Christmas Eve and Christmas day so that others can spend time celebrating Christmas with family. Kudos all around!

That is the best way to do it -- along with returning the favour to non-Christians at Hannukah, Eid, Dilawi, etc.

Major props to the employees of the Waffle House and Starbucks for being there on Christmas to feed and caffeinate weary travelers in Augusta, GA yesterday.

Although family dinners are best, when my father-in-law hosts the Christmas dinner, he books a table at a nice hotel restaurant. This year, we made it a potluck, just for 12 of us.

More importantly, when do the sales start? I have some gift cards that are burning a hole in my pocket!
01:44 PM on 12/26/2010
I believe the stores opened today..but I will not attempt to even go there! It will be a mass of people invading the malls, for the after Christmas sale..oh dear.. we will go an other day.. I forgot of all the returns/exchanges that will happen today as well:) Good Luck...

I was so annoyed when I went to Walmart last night to pick up a few extra things for the snow storm only to find it closed. Well, sort of...it was closed for Christmas, but filled with employees. The door wasn't even locked. I was just told by the security guy that it wasn't open.

I don't care about Christmas and I'm glad Sheetz agrees with me.
01:24 PM on 12/26/2010
Yeah well many people do care about Christmas and would rather spend it with their family's instead of selling you Doritos.
03:12 PM on 12/26/2010
You were annoyed that they were closed on Christmas? Wow.

Was this article written by a twelve year old, or did the author just get the concept from a twelve year old?

Excellent point.  I wonder if in todays mixed culture, a company should get each employee to submit a form naming the special religious or cultural days off they would like to have off?

Business is always complaining that they lose billions with each statatory holiday, but if all non christians had to work the Christian holidays like Christmas, Easter, etc, then the other faiths could get their days off when they need them, Kwaansa, Chanukah, Ramadan, etc.  These holidays would be applied equally to all, not requiring anyone to burn up vacation time while not requiring the business to pay overtime to anyone working those days.  A  Jewish person gets no overtime for working Christmas day while a Christian gets no overtime for working Chanukah for the Jewish person.

Opinions?

Above comment was a reply I gave to a comment on an earlier page.  I should have deleted the "Excellent Point" and instead explain that the person I replied to wrote:

When I was a newspaper reporter, many of my Jewish colleagues volunteered each year to work Christmas so we Christians could be with our families. I always thought that was kind of them, especially considering they had to burn vacation if they wanted any Jewish holidays off.

Do you have any idea how many mixed families are out there? Mixed couples....people who are invited to gatherings regardless of religious faith....etc.

Ramadan lasts a month....is that with pay or without? Also, it does not have a fixed time and moves around the year.

Channukah is 8 days...and Christians outnumber everyone else here.

Admirable idea and attempt to come up with something, but...diversity has it's challenges ;)

Ramadan isn't a holiday, really, any more than Lent is. But it is followed by Eid, which should be a day off for those who observe it, really. Easter moves around too, so that's not a problem. I think that in an increasingly diverse society, Altario's comment is a good idea. Americans actually work longer hours and get fewer days off than medieval peasants did, and fewer days off than contemporaries in many other countries. (I realize that observation will annoy some people who are out of work right now, and I apologize, but it is true.)

God bless the hard working police , fire, and hospital workers. But big corporate pigs just wanting to make people work so they can make a few more bucks shame on you

I'm thankful to all the people who went to work today. I am self employed, and rarely take a day off, but today I decided to curl up with the Huffington Post on my laptop. It's been fun.

I totally understand everyone working to make a few extra dollars though. I should be (I feel guilty) WE have to pay for those Christmas Presents some way. LOL

A lot of the companies that stay open on Christmas are open because their customers expect it. What do you think would happen if all the hotels were to give all of their employees off on Christmas? I worked for Disney for seven years, and if they were to close for Christmas you'd have a riot on your hands. Christmas Day is the busiest day of the year at the Magic Kingdom and when it's so busy you have to turn people away you're not going to close for the day.

Makes sense, since there are people who are not Christians and do not celebrate Christmas. Also, I was thankful to find an open gas station today on the way to grandma's house.
