Sounds good when it works, but when it doesn't - it'll be a disaster. Ford thinks you'll say "Time to buy a new Ford, this one's got problems." Ford still doesn't know that's not the way people react.

A smaller displacement engine, proper gearing, and engineering would save so much more.

Ford may have an ulterior motive in this idea. Most engine wear occurs during start up.

The Greenest idea I could put forward would be to end this kind of planned obsolescence. Build things to last, and you don't have all the materials to recycle when they die.

US cars are built to maximize profit. Maybe some day an automobile manufacturer will start producing cars for their stated purpose...... transport.

Reliable, simple to maintain, with by today's standards outstanding MPG (80-100 MPG is doable). IF that happens, they will win. I doubt it will be a domestic manufacturer.

Most engine wear occurs during start up, mostly due to the engine being cold. If the engine is still warm, as it will be with this feature, engine wear will be reduced. The starter will be more likely to go out sooner.

An idea that should have been realized years ago. If they can do it in golf carts, they can do it in cars.

Care to elaborate? There aren't any $7500 "gifts" going to Japan.

He can't elaborate because he doesn't know what he is talking about. Probably he's only regurgitating some load of it they fed him at the last tea party rave he went to.

The $7,500 tax credit for plug in hybrids was passed by Congress in 2008 and signed into law by Bush not by president Obama. The very American Chevy Volt is the first car which buyers are going to benefit from this tax credit.

Ford has plenty of surprises for next year in the conventional and plug in hybrid fields as well as an electric Ford Focus. Ford buyers who decide to go for some of this option will be able to take advantage of this tax credit.

The law didn't take effect till Dec 2009 and was passed by the Dem's for barak The Chevy VOLT Does not qualify for the credit and won't until 2012. Japan as always gets the boost from the US taxpayers. And then we have cash strapped CA also sending Japan and added $9K for everyone they ship here and the VOLT doesn't qualify.
This pro Japan and anti US produces has been going on for years in CA. When Toyoda exported their Pries they got a tax advantage and even though the Ford Hybrid also had the same level of pollutants CA refused to approve their use.

Don't forget Ford's great new Eco-Boost engines. tremendous power, great gas mileage. I think that beginning next year the Fiesta will get the Eco-Boost four cylinder. The hatchback looks great and will be a little screamer with this engine!
