Israel Ancient Human Remains Discovered, Report Scientists

Ancient Man

DANIEL ESTRIN   12/27/10 06:13 PM ET   AP

JERUSALEM — Israeli archaeologists said Monday they may have found the earliest evidence yet for the existence of modern man, and if so, it could upset theories of the origin of humans.

A Tel Aviv University team excavating a cave in central Israel said teeth found in the cave are about 400,000 years old and resemble those of other remains of modern man, known scientifically as Homo sapiens, found in Israel. The earliest Homo sapiens remains found until now are half as old.

"It's very exciting to come to this conclusion," said archaeologist Avi Gopher, whose team examined the teeth with X-rays and CT scans and dated them according to the layers of earth where they were found.

He stressed that further research is needed to solidify the claim. If it does, he says, "this changes the whole picture of evolution."

The accepted scientific theory is that Homo sapiens originated in Africa and migrated out of the continent. Gopher said if the remains are definitively linked to modern human's ancestors, it could mean that modern man in fact originated in what is now Israel.

Sir Paul Mellars, a prehistory expert at Cambridge University, said the study is reputable, and the find is "important" because remains from that critical time period are scarce, but it is premature to say the remains are human.

"Based on the evidence they've sited, it's a very tenuous and frankly rather remote possibility," Mellars said. He said the remains are more likely related to modern man's ancient relatives, the Neanderthals.

According to today's accepted scientific theories, modern humans and Neanderthals stemmed from a common ancestor who lived in Africa about 700,000 years ago. One group of descendants migrated to Europe and developed into Neanderthals, later becoming extinct. Another group stayed in Africa and evolved into Homo sapiens – modern humans.

Teeth are often unreliable indicators of origin, and analyses of skull remains would more definitively identify the species found in the Israeli cave, Mellars said.

Gopher, the Israeli archaeologist, said he is confident his team will find skulls and bones as they continue their dig.

The prehistoric Qesem cave was discovered in 2000, and excavations began in 2004. Researchers Gopher, Ran Barkai and Israel Hershkowitz published their study in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

With no Skull and no skeleton this isn't evidence its speculation, I personally think the African origin theory is the correct one.

Its no coincidence that an Is.raeli discovers this shortly after the 2010 census indicates a decline in religious belief and a corresponding rise in the acceptance of Secular Evolution.

Making the wild claims that its Homo Sapien, with just a tooth is preposterous.

This is proof that the christian son of god existed ... it is jesus' tooth ... he buried it in the 400k stratum hoping the tooth fairy would bring him a shekel.

How can this be? Doesn't holy scripture teach us that the world was created 5,771 years ago? Holy scripture wouldn't lie, would it? It's the scientists! They must be full of spit.

If the common ancestor came from Africa about 700,000 years ago and the remains found in Israel are 400,000 years old, how does that change the origin of man? There's still a 300,000 year difference and Israel is next door to Africa. Just saying.

Well, because they believed Homo sapiens originated in Africa at a certain time, but if they are finding older evidence of modern humans outside of Africa before this date, that changes their theories in terms of migration and development at least. And it could suggest that maybe this common ancestor migrated out of Africa and humans originated elsewhere.

That's the thing though, they are not finding older evidence, it's later by a couple of hundred thousand years. Add to that the distance between Africa and Israel which is negligible, they're connected, and there is really no major scientific breakthrough.

So it is a possibility, Modern humans evolved somewhere in Israel and then migrated back into Africa and to Europe. That might explain why Middle Easterners, Europeans and Asians have 2-4% Neanderthal DNA while Africans don't any Neanderthal DNA.

The out of Africa is just a theory, don't forget. If modern man has existed for 400,000 years, 500 Roman civilizations could have come and gone. All we really know anything about goes back only 20,000 years, a small fraction of our real history. But one thing is certain, we were just as dumb then as now. We didn't evolve and find a way to live on earth as one great civilization, with one voice. Otherwise, the struggle over the last 20,000 years would have been a lot easier. And look at Israel, a country in a war that will never end. How much longer can humans remain stupid? Until the oil runs out? Until we are no longer driven by greed? Until we can write history without selective memory?

How many Animals on Earth do you know of besides humans that kill each other for something besides food or mating?

Orcas kill for entertainment. Many species, such as apes, kill for territory.

I don't favor killing, I think we can do better than the other animals.

I don't agree with that, I think we've evolved and learned quite a bit. Remember evolution never stops, we are not at the end here, we just haven't made it to the "great civilization with one voice" yet. Whether we actually do, I don't know. I hope so though.

The content and tenor of the comments on this thread are most discouraging.

A guy finds an old bone and holds it up - says he thinks it could be pretty old and pretty interesting.

So naturally, the discussion about this old bone immediately morphs into the dumbest parade of religious and political cliches possible - and people compete with one another to demonstrate just how little they understand about science in general and human prehistory in particular. Conspiracy theories are added for good measure.

And this is among people with computers and internet access - supposedly the cream of modern humanity.

I try to be optimistic about the human race - really, I do - but then I encounter representatives of the species...

I take this with a grain of salt. The bone itself needs to be dated, and could have come from another layer of sediment. Still it will create a "buzz" and that is good for science. I predict it is either a human tooth (dated less than 100k) or a Neanderthal tooth.
