When I check my luggage, I give it one last nostalgic glance as it slides into the black hole behind the counter. I am usually convinced that I will never see it again, and if it does come out of the chute on the other end of the flight, I take it as a small miracle and go on with my day.

Never, ever, ever trust airlines with anything even remotely important or expensive.

All the best to Mr. D'arcy. I'm a Canadian, and I never fly Air Canada if it can be avoided. The personnel are surly and uninformed, the service is shabby, and any luggage that doesn't get lost or stolen gets put through their Baggage Crusher.

According to the AOL Travel News this guy left the airport and then called the airline to report the theft. Big mistake. If the locks were broken it should have been reported immediately to a baggage service agent and airport police. Still the airline is only liable for a very small amount unless you purchase excess valuation "insurance". Even then they will only insure up to about $2,000 I think. Never, ever put valuables in checked luggage.

It doesn't say much for airlines that having something stolen from within your checked luggage is far from unusual. They seem to have no problem with it or else they'd stop it, which they could if they really wanted to.

Doesn't say much for security if people have the opportunity to steal from your bags. If they can take something out without being noticed, they can put something in and stow it in the cargo hold

Hope his lawsuit makes it to court and is successful. I've had too many items over the years go "missing" when I travel. It never fails that when I fly, my checked bag is always searched and haphazardly put back together. I only carry items of value and medicines aboard with me now.

I've seen this. It's great. Back when I was playing professionally in orchestras, I used to have to buy a "seat" for my instrument in order to ensure its safe arrival. My cousin, a bassist and viol de gamba player in Europe, still does.

Anytime you put something in checked luggage it's hit or miss if you will have it on arrival. Lot of places you can wrap your luggage up in plastic wrap. That usually keeps it safe.

No offense, but it's widely known that it isn't a good idea to put anything of real value in your luggage. Until I wised up, I used to have stuff stolen out of my luggage every time my baggage was handled in Houston. Prescription meds, digital camera, small gifts.

Lock before you load!

Loading and locking won't do much good when the courts allow TSA to break the locks open if they can't unlock them with a pass key.

Even before the TSA. I had three Samsonite suitcases of the same model, bought in three different locations over many years, one key opened two, one key opened one and the third key ruled them all it opened all three suitcases. My wife's suitcase opened with the same keys also, practical but not very secure.

As written above, when they can take out they can put in.
I wondere which key was floating around in the baggage rooms?
