Elephants Play In Snow At Berlin Zoo (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 12/28/10 01:36 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Rather than hiding in shelter, elephants have been enjoying the snowfall at the Berlin Zoo -- playing in the fluff, munching on the cold treat and even throwing snowballs.

More snow is predicted in the German capital, so the elephants should be entertained for quite some time.

I called it first - we got snow, rain, and cold temps in winter, and all the global warming deniers came out of the woodwork.

I have never seen a baby animal that I didn't think was cute but a baby elephant has to be the cutest.

this is wonderful to see these elephants having fun.  in fact, it's wonderful to watch any animal having fun.

I have been to the Berlin Zoo, and I was impressed with how well laid out it was. There is room for the animals to run around and have fun, instead of just sitting in cages to be stared at as they suffer.

Ah, the proof of a soul is right there in their smiles. What beauty nature has wrought in the mighty elephant and its humble joyous demeanor.

am surprised elephants don't mind the snow given their natural habitats are much warmer.

Didn't Hannibal cross the alps on elephants? I don't know what time of year it was but there would have had to have been snow at some point.

I just saw an History Channel program about him. They said that the elephants were pretty much useless and many died during the trip.

My elephant doesn't like the snow. I have to keep the darn thing inside, and it's litter box takes up half the house. I have to use a bucket shovel to scoop it out.

Can't those elephants learn how to throw snowballs at each other like God intended?

well run zoos are a necessary e.v.i.l. anymore if these great species are to have any hope of surviving.

i'd rather see them in their natural habitats too, but i'd rather see them protected in zoos than extinct.

and you have to admit, these guys look like they are having a GREAT time.

Zoos just don't have the room. I have seen them in such cramped quarters it is awful. Now sanctuaries are different as they have room to run and move about where they want and where there are trees and such. I can live with sanctuaries but zoos not so much.

Like humans they probably need someplace to warm up after all they are at a zoo so there must be some sort of heated enclosure that they can go to if they feel they've had enough of the cold.

They look happy. I have never met an animal that didn't like to play in the snow. The first snow this year my dog went out on his nightly 3AM sabbatical and would not come back in. As he is really old and could barely walk I was worried about him. I watched him for a few minutes and he was having so much fun playing in the snow and eating it. Finally had to get dressed and go bring him in. All my dogs always loved the snow.

I guess you've never met my cat. Won't even step out of the door if there is any snow around.

I have had cats that didn't care whether there was snow or not and I have had others that wouldn't go outside for any reason. Where I live now I have only inside cats and one wannabe outside cat.

How Delightful! Definitely a sense of humor!
What did Tarzan say when he saw a herd of elephants charging at him? 'Look out, here come the Elephants!'
What did Tarzan say when he saw a herd of elephants, wearing sunglasses, charging at him? Nothing -- he didn't recognize them!

The definition of human has got to include a planet with free elephants.  If the elephants disappear, i don't think we are human in the same sense we understand human to mean now.
