Gilbert Arenas' Buzzer-Beater Waved Off: Magic Guard's 75-Foot Shot Hits Shot Clock (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/28/10 10:41 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

At the end of the first half of Monday night's game between the Orlando Magic and New Jersey Nets, Magic guard Gilbert Arenas launched a shot from 75 feet away as time expired. The ball bounced off the front of the rim, hit the shot clock and fell through the basket at the buzzer. Arenas and the Magic bench immediately raised their arms and argued that the shot counted. But the referees waved it off because the shot clock is, by rule, out of bounds. Arenas complained and appeared to tell the refs that the ball didn't hit the shot clock, but the video clearly shows it did. The Magic still went on to win easily 104-88. Scroll down to watch the shot.

Gilbert Arenas is a .6 on the Ron Artest scale. Normal people range from 4-7 mRons.

Cool shots though.

Still an impressive shot

That was very exciting and entertaining. And a demonstration of athleticism. Maybe the NBA should have an "off the shot clock" competition at the next all star game to compliment the slam dunk competition.

I guess Arenas' argument that the ball did not hit the shot clock, but rather it was a miraculous tip-in was not convincing.

I am beginning to notice that a lot of the Huffpost stories don't square with the headlines. Maybe there is just too much pressure to keep readership up. It is kind of the equivalent of cable news' constant "Breaking News" alerts which usually amount to nothing. There was nothing particularly controversial or even interesting about this clip; a team down by 7 at the close of the half having a basket waved off because the ball bounced off of the shot clock. I agree with the other people who have already pointed out that "buzzer beater" implies a dramatic, end-of-the game shot which turns defeat into victory. Maybe Huffpost headline writers should just give it up and write "Breaking News" in front of all of their headlines.

Buzzer beater means end of quarter, end of half, end of game, and end of shot clock.

What the hell is the argument? The ball went out of bounds and it was so obvious even Stevie Wonder could have seen it.

If the shot clock is out of bounds, why is it placed so near the basket? I know, the players need to see it, but I'm sure it's just as legible off to the side.

its is slightly behind the backboard. shot clock has always been out of bounds.

The top edge of the backboard is also out of bounds as is the supporting hardware above the basket. It's a very clear rule that has never caused any controversy... the only reason this is reported is because it's a slow news week.

Because it's a cool shot, has nothing to do with slow news.
